Arioua. Thu trip to La Vnr, the
capital of llolivia, h uboiil two dayH
from hero mid ono must travel part
of tho way on Lnko Titirnen, which
h tlio holiest lake in thu world,
Or one may go to Holivin from tho
Chilian port of Arifo whom I inn
now writing tho very Miiall, but
pretty little town from which nitrato
is hliippcd. A new railroad now eon-
nectM La Far. with tliin Chilian port
Tho distance is shorlcr, hut tliu roai
Ik very roiiih and Nleep.
Or one may go to La Far. also from
tho more southerly Chilian port of
Autofagahta, whieh I expect to reach
tomorrow. Thin Ih believed by mnny
to ho the bent unite, but thu best is
not very good.
Whatever routo ono taken, n climb
of about 1 1,000 feet above hen level
is neocuMiiry in order to eroxn tho
great Auilt'M mountain ninno that, like
it fence, htretchcH along thu entire
western count of South America.
Like other South American couu
tries, thu character nnd climate of
Holivin differ gicatly in different
KfclioiiK, Tho western poitmn is
very much like central Fern and has
u fine, clear climate. It has (lie up
pcaraueo of a Imircn desert until wit
ter is turned on, when it then become
it veritable cnnlcn. Tho beauty of the
desert, with these occasional cultivat
ed sections is broken now and then by
tho sie,ht of it rouuli mining town.
Tho southeastern portion is u plat
eau gradually sinking to thu prairies
of Argentina, FiiriiKiiuy and Hraril,
This plateau is lit t lu used today, hut
probably is possible of much develop
ment. Thu northeastern portion is
heaxily wooded, with it hot and wet
I'limutc, an one finds in tho rubber
jungles of western Hraril. This
means that tho oliiimto of llolivia
varies from an extremo cold and dry
ness in tho western flection to mi ex
tremo heat nod humidity in the uoith
eastern section; while thu southeast
ern poitiou Iiiih it temperate climate,
llolivia is about eight times the siro
of Now Kngiand it not being tpiitu as
luruu as Fern. In tho opinion of
many, Iiowcut, its resources eipml
thosu of Venezuela, Kctiador, Colum
bia or Peru.
The population of Holivin, however,
is considerably less than is that of
these other countries. Tho entire
population is estimated lit less than
2,1)00,00(1, uf which over three-ipmr-tors
are Indians and the balance dark
"whiles." The largest city is La Par,
which lias a population of about fit),
000, most of whom tiro Indians.
Although this city is the highest
city of its size in thu world, it being
FJ.-I70 feet nbovo sea luvol, its fine
climate makes it a healthy place lo
live. Personally, I heliove that tho
future of Lit Par. is bright and hope
ful. Tho icHoiueoH of Holivin, nt the
present time, nto chiefly mineral. The
western poitiou is rich in copper and
silver, while the southern and eastern
portions nro rich in silver, gold nnd
tin. One-third of tho entire worldV
supply of tin comes from this small
country. Ilorux, nitrates and vaiious
other chemicals are also found here.
Any render wishing to buy a gold
mine cheap should go to La Paz,
wheio mines can ho purchased for a
song. Moreover, these nro not Hike
mines, suci as nro sold in Wnll
ulrcd. Tliiisu prospects contain real
duposi'H of gold, silver and othor val
uable metals.
Hut why nro these mines for snio
so cheap! some render wonders. 'Tlio
answer is because they are so inac
cessible. You who hnvo never been
in these mountains hnvo no idea of
their vnstnesH. Machinery is noodcil
for operating it miiio and, under pres
ent conditions, it is almost impossible
to transport machinery 'over these
mountains and canyons. However,
great mineral wealth Ik coming some
day fiom those "mines" which can
now be. obtained almost for tho ask
ing. Ah I lutvu already stated, milling is
not tho ideal occupation of a nation,
Not only does it bring into tlio coun
try nn inferior dans: of immigrntion,
hut mining operations continually
take away n nation's nsscts, Agri

Why gold mine nn cheap In llolivia. A in I no lttin(sl In nn almost

arc a growing source of wealth which
enrich the many' to thu detiiment of
none.
Although many disagree with me, I
believe that llolivia has vast agricul
tural possibilities when the world
needs her pastures. Agricultuic in
llolivia must, however, be earned on
liy irrigation nlong seicnlifiu lines.
In tlio western Mirtion, where white
men ciiii live nnd be happy, it is too
dry nnd barren to attempt fnrmini;
excepting with tho aid of irrigation.
Hence tho future of uurietilture in
llolivia depends on what pi ogress ir
lipnlion development makes.
At the present time tin farmers arc
raising corn, maize, beans nnd similar
crops for local cnushmptinu. The
chief agricultural exports are hides
and wool.
