L
A most entertalntr.g genyetnan in
U. K. Oliver who has been In our
midst for iv few dn. engaged In
demonstrating the gentle art of forg
ery up-to-date.
Tho newspaper men wntched Mr,
Oliver nt work tho other day and
found It eceedlngl Interesting to
see him change the amount on nearly
every check that was placed before
him. With n few pen strokes "Two
Dollars" became 'Flvo Hundred,"
right In front of our eyes. A care
fully written "SKteeu" magically
changed to "Seventy-Six." "Fight
Dollars" wns transferred to "Eighty
Dollars" In a twinkling, nnd with
only one sweep of the pen.
Whero a more pretentious piece of
work Is required, ho adopts the old
forger trick of using acids with which
everything that has been written on
the check may be removed except
the slgnnturo and the amount, date,
name of paee, etc, rewritten to suit
tho forger.
Another case reported to the nows
paers was that of a 13 ear old girl
In Marysvllle, Cal., who confessed
that she had robbed her guardian of
hundreds of dollars by raising checks
bearing tho guardian's signature. Ono
of thefo checks originally signed for
only i Is In tho bands of the author
ities. It was changed to $80 nnd ac
cepted by tho bank without detection.
In tho course of Ills travels, Mr.
Oliver has made a hobby of collect
ing forgeries. Ho has a collection
of clippings almost as largo as a balo
of hay, nil of them relating to famous
cases of forgery that havo engnged
the attention of Plnkcrton men and
bank officials throughout tho coun
try. Some of his reproductions of
raised checks aro most interesting
examples of the forger's handiwork.
For Instance there Is a draft that was
raised by a professional band In Sun
Francisco from $12 to $22,000.
In fact, accordltiK .to Mr. Oliver,
)ou can never tell, when you sign
a check, whether all tho people who
will handle It are honest or not. So
tho only system, Is to stamp each
check with tho Todd "Not Over" nut-
chine thnt fortes the Ink through tho
