NOT DEAD-JUST
TITTC Dull Moose is not dead merely hibernating dur
ing (he wilder of its discontent.
The organization is still being kept alive, pending de
velopments. Roosevelt only awaits the opportunity to
breathe life into the inanimate form, lie himself may head
a third ticket again at any rate, he has not pledged him
self to support the logical reactionary candidates of the re
publican party.
Gilson Gardner, the Mail Tribune's "Washington cor
respondent, hits just made a trip to Ovster Bav to find out
whether Colonel Roosevelt
stand-pat candidate, tie writes the result as tollews:
"Former President Roosevelt has not promised to sup
port any standpat republican candidate for -president. This
statement may be accepted as authoritative. The colonel
intends to refer inquirers as to the future of tho progres
sive party to Victor Ahmlook, who is now chairman of the
progressive party national committee. They are agreed
that the thing not to do at present is to scramble head over
heels into the anus of the reactionary republicans who are
starting their subsidized, gumshoe, lull dinner pail pros
perity, Fairbanks-Burton campaign.
"Roosevelt is opposed to Burton because Burton is a
pacificist. Hais opposed to Te.ft always; he is opposed to
Root because Root was a political brigand at the Chicago
conventien: Senator Weeks
opposed to Watson, Fairbanks, Foraker, Penrose and
.Barnes. The republicans, m order to invite Roosevelt sup
port, will have to scurry around and get some kind of r
candidate quite different from anv of these."
"Colonel Roosevelt, has not abandoned the progressive
party, nor advised anybody
eighteen months from now
matter on which he is willing
himself kiioV. The present situation he describes as a
c hair-trigger' situation, nationally and internationally.
Almost anything is likely to happen. Men who followed
him in the revolt against tho old machine-controlled stand-
pat republicanism have nothing to do but to keep their
powder dry and their guns handy.
In other words, those who desire the progressive
party's support must bargain for it. with Roosevelt. If
they don't "come through" it will force the adoption of a
progressive platform and the nomination of a progressive
candidate, who will bo either Roosevelt himself or Hiram
Johnson, so that real progressives will have a candidate to
vote for, which would mean the re-election of Wilson.
Mr. Roosevelt's public activity at present is confined to
berating the democratic administration nothing in which
pleases him. lie censures its foreign and domestic pol
icies. He shouts loudly against its peace program and its
neutrality policy. He wants intervention in Mexico and in
Europe. lie wants a bigger army and a bigger navy. He
wants to prepare for war.
To a Pennsylvania republican recently elected to con
gress, who wrote to Roosevelt saying: "Why don't you
come back to the republican party; we want to support
you?" Roosevelt replied: "Why don't you come back to
the principles of the republican party during the time of
Lincoln when it stood for the people and not for special
privilege?"
It is evident that no candidate will meet Roosevelt's
approval except Roosevelt, and the Bull Moose must be
kopt alive to enable him to realize his ambitions.
