Irijil this season on n small sealo. to tost tho adaptability
of tho various soils in tho vnlloy to boot culture. All should
make tho tost, as n boot sugnr factory is among tho valley's
greatest needs, and nil effort will be made to secure such
n factory before the year ends.
A sugar factory hero would bo n paying proposition,
viewed l'roni nny nugle. Not only in the impetus given to
agriculture, stock raising and industry by its bi-produets,
but in the homo market that exists lor the. sugar. Freight
on sugar from Portland or San Francisco is o'OVi cents n
100 pounds, giving the homo fnofory n differential of this
amount to meet competition.
Medford nlone imports' about sixty carloads of sugnr
n year, or 2,000,000 pounds. Jackson county's annual
sugnr consumption probably totals approximately UK) car
loads. The southern Oregon and northern California con
sumption, in the territory served by Medford, will prob
ably total 2oO carloads, or 0,000,000 pounds. At six cents
a pound, this is over half a million dollars sent annually
out of the country that could be kept here.
To make this 250 carloads of sugar will alone require
2000 acres of sugnr beets, yielding, fifteen tons to the acre,
containing 15 per cent sugnr. Therefore nearly half of the
5000 acres of sugnr beets required to sustain a factory will
go to supply the local market, leaving the remaining to bo
marketed in the torritorv ininiediatelv north and south,
where tho freight differential in favor of Medford will per
mit competition with San Francisco and Portland.
It is evident, then, that a sugar factory in the Rogue
River valley is a business proposition for sugar makers.
Not only is the valley, with its wealth of sunshine and its
favorable climatic and soil conditions, peculiarly adapted
to boot culture, but its geographical location furnishes a
local market for the output.
While a local sugnr factory need not concern itself with
foreign markets or production, conditions nil point to n
continued high world market for sugnr. Fifty-throe per
cent of the world's sugnr is produced bv the countries at
war. Europe produces i)!t per cent of the beet sugar grown,
most of it is produced in llernmny, Austria-Hungary and
Russia. The United States is the largest per capita con
sumer oL sugar, its one-sixteenth ot the world s population
using one-titth ot the world s sugar, the per capita con
sumption reaching over eightv-five pounds.

Last year's Russian crop has
export it. The industry in Poland, Belgium and northern
France has been destroyed. Shortage in all European
countries has resulted from the withdrawal of workers to
the army, the destruction of factories to secure metal for
war munitions, and curtailed planting. The prospective
shortage will continue for veal's, whether the war speedily
ends or not, assuring hifch price for sugar.
