SOLVINa SHIPPING PROBLEMS

west is gradually getting upon a business basis. Tim
citrus fruit grower of southern California yeftvs ago was
forced to solve the same problems and has done so suc
cessfully. Co-operation is the key to the solution of the growers
and shippers' problems co-operation among growers in
orchard care, in fruit picking and packing, and co-operation
among shippers in marketing.
Quantity production spelled the doom of the individual
shipper and the doom of the shipper on consignment ac
celerated by the dishonest' and rapacity of the commis
sion broker. The orchardist must, look forward in the
future, not to fancy prices, but to sure markets at reason
ably profitable prices, and in order to enlarge his markets,
he must plan to reduce the price of his products, lie must
get upon a manufacturing basis.
The formation of growers' and shippers' leagues, com
prising all the fruit, belts of the northwest, is the most
hopeful sign of tho times. The need of the hour has forced
it. Co-operation is essential all along tho line, and the
scientific distribution of the fruit, so as not to glut any
one market, is as imperative as the f. o. b. sale wherever
possible, the minimum price consignment and tho opening
of new markets.
The war has demoralized the European markets for
fruit. Lack of adequate shipping facilities threatens tc
hamper it for years to come. Meanwhile the orchard out
put is constantly increasing and profitable markets must
be found if fruit raising is to be established on a sound
business basis.
A meeting has been called for tonight at the library
building of orchardists and shippers ot the valley to dis
cuss co-operative shipping and marketing, which all fruit
growers are requested to attend. Among those who will
speak is II. G. Davidson of Hood River, president of the
Pacific Fruit Distributors, and also president of the newly
organized shippers' council.

Now is the time to begin the war upon digger squirrels,
gophers, moles, rats, mice and other pests that do much to
lessen the growers' profits. Every animal killed within
the next few weeks means many less for the fanner to
fight the coming summer, as spring is the season when
they breed and multiply.
The league has published the best methods of exterm
inating the predatory animals, recommended traps to use,
given recipes for preparing poisoned food, and arranged
to supply poisQned grain at wholesale prices. They have
done- everything except place the traps and the poison, and
it is up to the farmer to do the rest.
