members of the crew of the Cardiff
steamer Hrnuksomc Chine, a govern
ment collier, had landed there nnd
announced the sinking of their vessel,
cither by n mine or a torpedo in the
hngliMi channel twenty miles south
east of Ucachy Head, about 2 o'clock
yesterday afternoon. This probnbly

Oakby Torpedoed
LONpON, Feb. 24. Another nrit-i-di
steamer has been sent to the-bottom
of the sen by a German subma
rine within the war zone established
by the decree of tho German ndmir
alty. Tho Oakby was torpedoed off
Ilyc, but her erev was rescued. The
loss of tho Oakbv apnarcntlv was
mentioned in n dispatch from Lydd,
hngland, uit night, though her name
wns not mentioned.
The Oakby wns bound in ballast
from Loudon for Cardiff, Wales. She
was struck on the port side. The
fishinir smack Gratia, which wok four
miles off, felt the shock and hastened
to the scene, arriving in time to tnkc
off tho crew, none of which was injured.

ment from Petrograd reports that In

flict is sharpest, are said to have
been repulsed.

detached battles continues -with no

war ofrico announced that Austrian

pulsed; with enormous losses for tho
attacking forces. It Is claimed that
during tho last month mora than
48,000 Austrlans have been cap
tured. In the fighting around Przasnysz,
northern Poland, which has become
tho storm center of tho eastern cam
paign, 1200 Russians have been cap
tured, tho German "war office an
nounced today. Russian forces suc
ceeded In effecting a passage of tho
nobr river at two places but In ono
of tho resultant engagements are said
to have been driven back.
On the western front, tboro has
