GEORGE A. .JACKSON, a piom-or fanner !' Motlfonl,
furnishes coni'lusive evidence that. "Rogue River val
ley grows fine sugar beets. Ueets that he grew without,
irrigation in East Med ford won a gold medal at the Lewis
and Clark Centennial Exposition at Portland in 15)0.") in
competition with the world. In size and percentage of
sugar they lead the products of all other regions, proving
that natural conditions are most favorable for growing
beets.
AVhen the record of other localities is cited, when it is
proven conclusively that the sugar beet is the certain fore
runner of prosperity, it, is hard to understand the vicious
and brainless opposition that has arisen in certain quar
ters. Rome of tho loudest in their opposition to the sugar
factory are themselves hanging on by the eyelashes, wait
ing for something to turn up to start something that will
enable them to sell out at a profit. Here providentially
comes the opportunity long sought, and they are windy in
their opposition to those who only seek to enable them to
help themselves.
Tf half the energy and a tenth of the noise spent in
knocking should be expended upon farm in growing sugar
beets, thereby insuring a sugar factory, prosperity would
replace hard times and fixed land values idle speculation.
The way for the farmer to pay his mortgage is to ex
pend his energy upon the farm growing something he can
produce at a profit and sugar beets is that something.
THE MAYOR'S REWARD
TUTS is the last day of the administration of Mayor
Purdin and the old council. Tonight ushers in a new
regime; and yet not new, tor there are only two new laces
in the council", and the new mayor is a veteran in city ser
vice. There is every reason to believe that the city affairs
will receive an economical administration during the com
ing year. It is the duty of all citizens to bury factional
differences and work together to help make the adminis
tration a success.
Mayor Purdin in his annual message showed that the
perpetual anvil chorus rasped his nerves a little by ex
claiming: To thoso of" tho council who held over I offer my sympathy, ns well
as to my successor In office and new members of tho council. Do not think
you will receive any reward for duty well done, cither In remuneration or
appreciation, for we have tho knocker with his littlo hammer always with
us, and he will find you out. . " 'm:
What did the mayor expect? Is not the multitude
usually heedless of the efforts in their behalf, if not always
ungrateful i llave they not crucified their saviors and
crowned their Caesars? Will not the chip-trap of the dem
agogue secure plaudits against the lifelong endeavor of the
sincere?
Does not the valley afford numerous examples where
those who are unselfishly devoting themselves and ex
pending their time, energy and money freely for the good
of the entire valley, reap only the reward of abuse, villifi
eation and scandal fmm those who are too selfish to under
stand and too short-sighted to see that they themselves
will be the first to profit from the toil of the others?
Mayor Purdin has given his best for the city's welfare,
as have those who were associated with him. J lis reward
is that of duty well done and the quiet appreciation of
those who, like him, understand the meaning of "service,"
of unselfish endeavor in behalf of others, a labor that is
in itself reward sufficient for endeavor that mere money
can never buy. Self-approval is for the discerning and
enlightened the severest test and not all the noisy com
mendation of the world can bestow it.

It bus Ion? been clear that the

Open Way to Recovering Treasures
In the Jnnunry American Mngiulno
Cleveland Moffctt writes a most In
teresting account of n new Invention
by which moving picture ot tdmrks
nnd other sea llfo are now tnkon nt
great dvnths. Tho Inventor, Chnrlea
Williamson, H n sea captain of Nor
folk, Virginia, whoso pons, Oeorgo
nnd Krnest are carrying on tho work.
The essential ot tho Invention Is a
tube which Is lowered Into the wnler
In which human belnps nro'onnblod

with the assistance of powerful
searchlights which they enrry. In tho
following extract tnkon from the ar
ticle Mr. Moffctt relntes his conver
sation with ono of tho Williamsons
ns to the probability thnt this new
Invention opens tho way to regnln
lot treasures nt tho bottom ot tho
sea which amount to many hundreds
of millions of dollars.
" 'Some sny there Is more gold at
the bottom of tho ocean than thero
Is In circulation,' remarked George
Williamson. 'It Is certain that gold
and silver hnvo been sinking In tho
Eca for centuries, millions n month,
going down like rain nnd never, com
ing up again. We think wo hnvo n
wny of getting some of tho treasure
up.'
" 'With your deep sen tube?'
" 'Yes. My father Is now working
out plans to Milvngc tho "Mcrcdn"
which was wrecked off tho Virginia
const a few years ngo. Tho board of
underwriters hnvo given him n con
tract to do this salvago work. Tho
"Mcrcdn" carried a Jnrgc quantity of
silver bars, besides n snfe full of Jow-

per deck.'
"How fnr enn you go down with
the tube?'
" 'Competent engineers say to n
depth of eight huuijred fvKJt, nnd to
go even deeper Is nieroly n matter
or structural detail. A depth within
our immediate reach Is two hundred
and fifty feet. Wo cull that our com
mercial depth, nnd there nro wrecks
enough with thnt limit to keep men
working for n hundred onrn. The
"Empress of Ireland," for Instance,
lies In only two hundred feet of wat
er.' " 'Wo would blow up tho wreck
with dynamite, and tlion use tho
grappling and hoisting apparatus.
The great point Is that tho tubo will
allow us to search the bottom ot tho

rest Is merely a matter of engineering
