opportunities in Jack
son county for hunting
and fishing. Tho
Rogue river especially,
offers royal sport at
certain reasons In fly
fishing for the steel
l)end (rainbow) trout,
the fish '.fining from
three to twelve, pounds
or moro in weight.
Larger salmon may bo
caught by trolling or
by spoon, and thero
are a great many
streams in tho foothills
and mountains where
brook trout aro plenti
ful in season. Tho
several lakes of the
district, Including Hah
lake. Squaw lake,
Four-Mile lake and
Lake of the Woods
tho latter two lakes being Just out
sldo the county boundaries to the
cast offer splendid outing Bites, In
cluding fishing, hunting and boating.
Quail and grouse are plentiful in
many sections of Jackson county, and
deer are fairly numerous In nearly
every wooded part of tho county at
certain times, and plentiful at near
ly all times in other sections. Dear
and cougars aro not so plentiful, but
may often bo found in the most iso
lated districts.
A large hatchery on the Rogue riv
er at tho mouth or i:k creek is oper
ated by the United 8tutea Bureau of
Hatcheries, turning loso from 5,000,
000 to 10,000,000 6almon fry yearly.
In co-operation with tho State Fish
and Ganio Commission, from 1,000,
000 to a, 000,000 trout fry aro hatched
and liberated annually, thus ensuring
good fishing for future years.

In Oregon docs fish and gamo abound
so plentiful ns in this section, nnd
all within a day's travel from Med
ford. The opening of tho doer season
netted Its regular fatality, one man
being mistaken for a deer by a mem
ber of his own party. It was tho
only accident of seriousness in hunt
ing during tho year.
In tho spring, summer, and fall
scores of Medford families take to
the woods for hunting and fishing,
and out door sport has a long list of
devotees of both sexes.
County Schools
Jackson county's public school sys
tem consists of two districts of the
first class (having more than 1000
children of school ago), Medford and
Ashland; five districts of tho second
class (from t'00 to 100 children of
school age), Central Point, Jackson
llle, Gold Hill, Talent and Phoe
nix, and nlnct-ono districts of tho
third clus.t.

supervisory districts. Two supervis
ory aside from tho county superin
tendent are employed to suporvlso
tho work in tbe rural schools.
During tho past school year tlfero
was an enrollment of 494S pupils
and -13 teachers wero employed.
Fourteen high schools wore In oper
ation with an enrollment of 710 pu
pils. Manual training and domestic
science courses have been Introduc-'
ed In tho schools of Medford, Ash
land, Central Point, Gold Hill and
Talent, Other places will take up
this sumo work in another year. Spe
cial instructors In music are employ
ed In Medford, JncksonW le, Central
Point, Talent, Phoenix, Gold Hill,
Rogue River and Wagner Creek.
During tho last six years every
