Pacific Highway
(Conttlnuod Horn rno 1.)
Along this stretch of routl is u
sprint; of water bo cold that it makes
ouo'b teeth hurt, and of sufficient
quantity to keoj) h Itttlo Btroam run
ulng during the hottest weather.
All at onco the pass is reached and
crossod and ono looks down Into the
beautiful lloguo' rlvor valley over
miles of wooded mountains and cliffs
and tho floor of tho valley boyond
with Mt. Pitt in tho distance.
Tho highway follows ,tho rldgo
for a short distance within vlow of
both valloyH one In Oregon and tho
othor in California, then it dips and
runs along tho hlllsido toward tho
railway station at Siskiyou at tho
north ontranco of tho long Southern
Pacific tunnel. Jinny long curves
are necessary on this route, hut our
plan of keeping tho curves big
enough so as to glvo a long vlslhlo
stretch of road ahead, has been
maintained. At Siskiyou tho road
approaches tho track on a hlx per
cent grado and turns through
threo Quarters of a circle, and fol
lows on down tho hlllsido making u
hair pin curve. From this point
down to Stlnoman It Is nocessary to
dovelopo considerable dlstanco and
put In qulto a number of scenic
curves In order to get down on a six
por cent grado. At Stlnoman Is
was necessary to make a comploto
loop and coino around under our awn
road in order to savo a tremendously
oxponsivo fill. Tho highway crosses
tho Southern Pacific trucks on an
over-head crossing built of rein
forced concrcto, then makes tho big
loop and comes around under anoth
er concoroto span, carrying the high
way over itself. Wo havp. nnothcr
reinforced concrete brldgo over the
railway at Dollurhldo's crossing to
avoid that grado crobsiug. It has
been tho policy of tho department
to do uway entlroly with all grado
crosuing8 of tho railroad In order
to avoid danger to llfo. Uy tho
building of this now road, six vory
dangerous grado crossings of tho
railroad will be dono awuy with, It
Is tho belief of Htato Mtghwuy Kngl
neor Howlby, that when an expensive
road Is being built, and an cxponslvo
pavement placed upon it, that it
should bo so locatod that the peoplo,
a few years hence, will not havo to
abandon tho road becauso of Us dan
gerous crossings or heavy grades,
Considerable opposition has devel
oped to over or under crossing In
tho county, but It Is tho belief that
tho plan of absoluto safety to llfo,
and tho building for futuro truffle,
as well as for tho present, Is ap
proved by thp great majority.
Two miles more of grado, winding
In uud out along tho wooded hill
sldos, and tho floor of tho valley Is
reached and tho hlghwuy winds
among farms that wcro soon from
the summit 2000 fcot above. Tho
road passes through Ashland, a
beautiful city at tho foothills or tho
Siskiyou mountains, woll paved and
pleasingly situated.
At tho north city limits, It Is plan
to avoid tho now dangerous rullroad
crossing and heavy grade, by pass
ing under the railroad track at a
point approximately 300 feet north
of tho present grado crossing. This
roadway will pass undor tho track in
a long straight lino which will not
only do away with nil possibility of
collision with trains, but also .with
tho vehiclos on tho highway. Duo
to tho fact thut right of way could
not bo obtained through tho Hillings
property without going to extromo
measures, this crossing and tho now

has been tho plan of tho county
court and tho highway commission
to so build tho road that thoro will
