Klvor and tributary valley of Jack
son county Is tho report of tho re--cent
toll survey made by the bureau
of holls, Unl tod 'States department ot
agriculture, and published under tho
tlte, "8oU Survey or tho Mcdford
Area, Oregon." In the total forty
three distinct types of soil are rccog
nlxed in tho map published by tbla
survey. Tho Rogue Ulver valley area
Is very "spotted," to use a popular
term. Hence, WTat "oneeection may
do fn the way of production may bo
absolutely no criterion of tho agri
cultural worth of a strip of land a
quarter of a mile away. Any given
quarter tcctlcn of land may havo halt
a dozen different typen of soil, each
separate typo perhaps beet fitted to
tho production is barren of trees and
brush, whereas almost all tbo re
maining areas of agricultural lands
of tho county wcro originally covered
with brush and treo growth, tho
greater part of which has been
cleared.
Stock Raising
Stock raising has always been an
Industry of considerable relatlvo im
portance in Jackson county. Condi
tions for stock raising are. especially
favorable. Tho climate is mild.
Thoro is llttlo snowfall during tho
winter months, honco tho reeding per
iod is short. Green feed may be
had on tho hills during a largo part
ot tho cntlro year. And tho adjacent
mouutaln areas afford summer pas
ture. Thoro are yet a number ot
largo stock ranchoa In tho smaller
vallcs of the county, and In tho out
lying districts adjacont to tho better
rango. Also, other districts with
grcator range areas, such as eastern
Oregon, havo long looked to Jackson
county and southern Oregon tor their
supply of young cattlo to stock ther
ranges and big ranches and to sup
ply winter feeders. Tho adjacent
national forests will always afford a
tlxod amount ot summer rango tor
Jackson county cattlo, and thoro Is a
large area of tho roungher timbered
and mineral bearing land that wilt
always bo available tor grazing pur
poses. Tho open grazing lands of Jackson
county aro generally stocked to their
capacity, however, and the greatest
extension of stock rntslng will bo on
