The city is quiet, but the inhabi

concerning the final outcome of this
transfer of nuthority. All saloons in

Efforts to Break Through Allies'

LONDON, Nov. 23. At two jmmiiIs
in the battle lino extending across
France and Dclgiuni tho Germans
were mnking determined efforts today
to break through ami nt tho same
time a critical struggle was under
way in Uussiiin Poland.
Today's French statement said that
at Ypres, Ilclgium, the pointf selected
for the new German attempt to force
n way through to tho English chan

violent and that many buildings were
set on fire.
In tlie region of the Argonne for
est, well on toward the eastern end
of the line, where tho Germans aro
centering another severe attack, tho
fighting yesterday was described us
"very hot," and it is said that tho
German onslaughts were repulsed.

not disclosed.
Severe l-'Jghtlnfj Admitted
The Gennnu official statement
sieuks of the severe fighting at
Yprc.i, nml also snys that n British
squadron's attempt to bombard Nicu
port was repulsed twice. ' "
In the Argonne region it is said
the Germans are gaining ground
slowly.
Tho renewed efforts of the Ger
mans iu the west, notwithstanding the
effects of tho cold, wet weather
which was said to make fighting in
the lowlands almost an impossibility,
attracted renewed attention to tho
western field of baltle. Tho Btrugglo

forces in the east, however, still was
rated as of greater immediate impor

outcome is expected to exert upon tho
whole future course of tho war. From
this quarter came no definito uew's
today. Derliu was confident of mi
early decisive victory, hut tho war
office there acknowledged today that
nrnvnl of Itussinn reinforcements
hud postponed the decision.
