There nro yet no such maps of
this country. Tho European maps
nro tho products of yeani of toll in
preparation for war nnd those used
hy General Joffre, tho Froiic'i com-niauder-lu-clilof,
General Froin't. tin

Willi such maps nt his disposal n
ronunnndcr can be far in the rear of
his long battle lino and yet know
from moment to moment tho exact
nature of obstnncles in any portion
of the front ho is facing. Ho could
direct the places of entrenchment
to within a few yards of any small
detail or battery of gun a and could
order forward his heavy artillery
along a certain rond with entire con
iiucnro ttiat tho road would carry
tho huge weight. There is no trail
or bypath, ditch or stone fence that
is not shown.
For nearly fifteen years the I'nlted
States army has been struggling In
a modest way to supplement its maps
of this country o they could offer,
to a very modest degree at least, tho
aid to military operations which Eu
ropean commanders have at hand.
Tho progress of fifteen years on
the hugs "task is described by army
officers as "insignificant," outsido
of Its educational value.

but sho regards being a Hud Cross

would go without thinking of the ser

"Affectlottal and emotional nurs

llrowne described It In an address be
fore tho Kensington District Nurs

deal of spurious uurslmr about this
time," ho went on to say. "I heard
tho othor day or a fashionable lady
who called on a matron at a provin
cial hifspltal and said: 'I wish to
have a week's training as a nurse on
any terms you like, uut I cannot
give more than n week to It, for 1
want to go to the front.'
"That sort or thing." fald Sir
James, "Is highly reprehensible, for
in no branch of nursing is cousu
mate skill required more than in the
management of wounds and the
wounded. Tor half-baked nmnteurs
to meddle in such matters Is to en

PKTItOGItAD. Nov. 20 The dis
pute respecting the disposition of the I
most important manuscripts of Count
Tolstoi, the novelist, has at length
been decided by tho court of Final
Instance In favor of tho widowed
Countess. The manuscripts of these
earlier works, upon which the writer's
true fame is bused, wero given In
Tolstoi's lifetime to his wife, who, de
posited them, witli ptber relics, in the
.Moscow Historical Museum.
Tho unfortunate wording of Tol
tol's will led tho daughter to at
tempt to secure these gifts to Count
ess Tolstoi as a part of tho novel
ist's estate, wlille tho countess, also
fearing to lose them, endeavored to
recover them from the Historical
MiiFeum, which, pending a settle
ment of tho dispute, refused to hand
them over to either party. It hns
now been decided that they may bo
returned to the widowed counters as
her property.
