FOREST RESERVES

1014, over 12,000,000 foot (board
lnoumiro) of timber In Oregon and
2,110(1,000 foot (lmanl measure) in
Washington veto given awny uiulor
free line permit. This free distrihu
ligu is limited to .VJO worth per yeiir
per settler, or nbout eighty conR
The excess in Oregon oer Wash
ington is nceounted for in several
ways, Tlie national forests in Oregon
eoer npproiinntcfr lll,."no,00 aero?,
wliile those in Washington eovor only
nbout O.nOO.OOO acre. In Wnsiiiinr
ton the forests are mainly in the
Douglas fir region west of. the Can.
cudcS, and are not as ueces-s-ihle as
tho east side forests; while those in
Oregon aio scattered over the state.
Ill eastern Oregon, in tho dry region,
there is little or no timber except
in tho national forests, and tho farm
ers and sol Iters depend upon them
for their wood supply. Over 74 per
cent of tins free wood taken out was
dead or down timber. whoo removal
is a groat benefit to the forest, as it
lessens the danger from fire.
Kates lVom 1'nrcslN
In addition to timber given nwny,
f21 sales were made from Oregon
forests and 142 from Washington. It
is interesting to note Mint this repre
sents 24,591,000 board feet for Or
egon forits seal l9!),M(,flntl Loan!
feet for Washington forests.
Although the number of pales in
Oregon exceeds the number in Wash
ington, tho amount of timber is
greater in Washington because the
Kales were larger one was for ."8,
000,000 feet and another for f0,000,
000 feet; whereas the fi21 sales in
Oregon represent smaller individual
sales, 03 ier cent of them being smnll
sales involving $100 worth or Ie.
In eastern Oregon on one forest alone
3(11 sales were made. The average
jirice received for the timber was
$1.78 per 1000. The revenue fi-oii-sales
amounted to .$ 1."0,:I02 for Ore
gon and $00,0 17 for Washingten: :W
per cent of this amount is turned over
to the state for road and school pur
poses. (razing Iluslncxs- Heavy
The grazing business, too, is henvv
on the national forests of the two
states. Last year tho grazing privi
lege wns granted iu Oregon for 100,
151 entile and horses and 872,80'J
sheep, and iu Washington for 14,.ri7l
entile and horses and l!KI,.r)S)B sheep.
This represents 2204 permits lor Or
egon and "il() for Washington. Again
tho difference in the business for the
two states is dife to the difference iu
the ehnraeter of the forexts. The
forests of eastern Oregon nie much
more open tlum the forests on the
west side of the Cascades, and furn
ish better opportunity for feeding
stock. Furthermore, the Oregon for
ests nro easily accessible, and usually
fully stocked, because the available
winter range is much moie eAtensive.
In order to administer and protect
theso national forests, the forest ser
vice Iiuh, up to date, constructed in
Oregon 427 miles .of road, 2263 miles
of trail, 2428 miles of telephone line
aild 70 bridges, and in Washington
304 miles. pf rond, 1529 miles of trail,
074 miles of telephone lino and ,VJ
bridges. Not only does this improve
ment work aid in the administration
of the forests, but it opens them up
lor the uso of the public.
There is another benefit which the
states teceive as a result of national
forest activities, and that is in the
moniy which this branch of the gov
ernment spends annually in the lo
cality for labor and supplies. This
amounts to an n vertigo of .f.r5B,414
for Oregon and $270,405 for Wnsh
ington. E
