TO tilSCUSS IRRIGATION
Til 10 inmu'riiutf futuro of tho vnlloy ritKnuls It) a very
lai'jro oxlcnt upon tho i-onslniftion of sin irrigation
system which will place the entire valley under water mm
so make possible intensive cultivation, vyhieh will increase
many fold the annual production. w - '
In a comparatively wet season, like tlfal of 1915). the
valley's output was several times, in fruit, vegetables and
staples, what it has been in the dry season of 191-1. 'Phis
alone tells the story of the need of water. "With irrigation,
it would be every year many times that of the most favor
able seasons without it.
Fruit raising is not a commercial proposition, except
upon most suitable soil, without irrigation not but that
fruit can be growU profitably in favorable years, but it is
the average that the fruit grower must depend upon, and
the average orchard that the valley must figure upon, and
tlio large annual output is impossible without irrigation.
That is why a smaller area of planted orchard in the north
em districts has so much greater annual output than tho
Rogue .River valley.
Watsonville and the Tajara valley, California, offer an
example of the irrigated valley. With far less acreage in
fruit, the annual output exceeds 5000 caiy, while produce
of even greater value is also annually shipped from this
relatively small territory through intensive farming.
To make hog raising most profitable, irrigation is
needed, and with water to raise the necessary produce,
thousands of cars of hogs can be shipped from this valley
annually. In fact, intensive farming, save on the most
favorably located land, is impossible without irrigation. Jn
every line of .production water is an essential.
AVliether it will be most advantageous for the valley to
form itself into an irrigation district or not is for the peo
ple to deoijlo. A mass meeting to diseuss the situation has
been called for Saturday afternoon at the Aledford public
library, and every person interested should be present.
it is very generally realized that something definite
must be done," and done at once, to remedy the existing
situation and place tho valley in the productive class it be
loucs in.
