Jim George, defendant In the
Peter Drown murder trial before the
federal court, took tho stand In hU
own behalf thli morning, nnd bore
out tho trend of tho defense's theory
that he. was with friends nt the time
tho shots were fired that killed
llrown. An Interpreter sat beside
tho be-spectnclcd prisoner, but often
George In hts nnxlely would answer
tho queries In Kngllsh before thu In
terpreter could ask In his native
tongue.
George stood the strain of croiis
examination well and responded to
all questions freely, lie testified
that he left Drown before reaching
the Piute cemetery where the body
was found, and that tho first he
know of the crime was when hot was
awakened about noon the next day
at the Millar George home, and with
tho rest of tho family drove to the
cemetery to see the body of n former
friend. He made a strong witness In
his own bebalf.
To rcfuto tho allegations of the
government that tracks Identical with
those of a horso belonging to George
were found near tho body, the de
fense put O. G. Anderson, a Klamath
cattle man, on tho stand who testi
fied that a day or two before tho
murder, he and the defendant had
rode through the cemetery, and thnt
George rode a sorrel horse. The
government on cross examination,
proved that George owned two sor
rel horses annulling much of tho
value of the testimony.
