Biography of

German army In France and their
coihnlanders, Americans know little
or nothing about the latter.
The two German commanders
whose names have figured most
prominently In tho war news are
Gonerat Alexander II. It. von Kluck
and General Karl W. P. von Duelow.
Both are elderly men, having passed
their sixtieth birthday last spring.
General von Kluck was born at
Muonster. In Westphalia, and was
educated In tho Gymnasium In that
city. Ho entered tho army In 1SC5,
and took part In tho campaign of
1S6G as a second lloutcnant of tho
f.otlj Infantry.
Ho held that rani: in tho Franco
Prussian war, during which ho was
twice wounded In the Met, campaign,
and not until 1873 did he becomo u
first lieutenant. Tho next year he
was married; In 1S7C ho became ad
jutant of an Infantry brlgado, and
three years later he won his captaincy.
From 1881 to 1S84 he was attached
to a'mllltary school at Juellch, a su
burb of Alx, nnd he was then niado
commanding officer at Annaburg.
and, after becoming a major In 1887,
at Neu Brelsach.
In 1S89 ho received command of,
a battalion of tho 66th Infantry and
was made Its lieutenant colonel In
1893. Three years later ho becamo
eolonel, .with command ot tho Laud-
wear District of Pcrlla, aaTfa 2898
he 'obtained the 34th. Fusilier Regl-
uent.
A raajor-geaeral. the Best year,

most ot the fighting in Uelgtum nnd
who was erroneously reported killed
In one of tho engagements there, has
had n career very similar to that of
Gonerat von Kluck, though including
more staff than lino commands.
He was born In llerlln in lSG-t,
studied at tho llamni and Wilholm
Gymnasium, and October 21, 1864,
joined tho 2nd Guards Regiments,
the same In which his younger son
Is now n lieutenant.
In tho war between Prussia nnd
Austria; In 1866 ho served as lieuten
ant anil was slightly wounded at
Soor. In. tho Franco-Prussian war
ho was with tho 2nd Guards Land
wchr regiments and In 1871 war
made first lieutenant.
From 1872 for flvo years ho served
as adjutant, and In 1S77 ho was
made a captain and transferred to
the general staff. For one year,
ISS-t, ho commanded n company in
tho 96th Regiment, and ho then re
turned to the general staff as major
In 1890, a lieutenant colonel, he
was chief of the general staff of thn
Guards Corps and in ISiM, receiving
his colonelcy tho previous year, ob
tained command of tho 4th Guards
Realnieat.
In 1897 he was made major gen
eral with direction of the administra
tion of Justice In the army, and in
1900 he became lieutenant general
and the next year received command
of tho second Guards Division
He was quartermaster general on
the general staff in 1902 and the
next year received command of the
3rd Army Corps, receiving the rank ot
general of Infantry In 1904. Just
prior to tho beginning of the present
war he served as inspector general of
the 3rd Inspection District.
