Contritions in the valley have radically changed in the
past few years in favor of the producer. He can market
his produce locally, vlicre a few years ago it, rotted in the
fields. Soil, climate and natural conditions favor him.
Only intelligent industry is necessary o secure desired
results. -'i
Tin mvhnrdisi. Hko the farmer, should nmkb tluriuost

in price through the destruction or neglect oHhe crops
tif the old world by war. The orchardist should tliifrelore

CEMENT MAKERS' OPPORTUNITY
ALL of the eeiuout used in Oregon is shipped in from
other states heueo there should he an ample home
market for the produet of the plant now heing ereeted yt
Gold Hill. It would seem, therefore, that the quicker tU
plant got into operation the hetter. ,-"rT
A hulletin of the LTnited States geologieal survey wills
attention- to the .faet that little effort has been made to
export American made Portland cement, though nulls tre
quently shut down because of over-production. The ex
ports have never exceeded 5 per cent of the total output
not sufficient to take care of the surplus in a year of
great activity.
The conditions brought about by the war would sceni
to offer cement makers the opportunity of iiici't'itsiug their
export business. Statistics show that the, export of cement
from England, Germany, Belgium and France not only
have been considerably greater than those from the United
States, but have, borne a much higher, ratio o the produc
tion in these countries. The quantity of cement exported
by France in recent years is. estimated to havo reached at
least 23 per cent of her production, and that of Germany
about 17 per cent.
There arc few cement plants in South American coun
tries, and in the past these countries have been supplied
mainly from Europe. There is evidently an opportunity
now for the cement industry of the United States to
secure this trade, although the
and low-priced material sucii as cement does not promise
large direct profits to an individual producer, indirectly
the creation and maintenance of an export trade should
benefit the industry at large. u'
