Prom Present Camp.
"'Work on tho road within the
park, leading1 toward Medford, will
be undertaken during the present
working season, hut ojwmtions will
be carried on from the camp already
established near the superintendent's
hendqnarters about two nnd one
half miles from the camp at Pole
bridge creek, the party in this camp
having just about completed the
grading work on the road between
their camp nnd the rim, and the
party at Pole Bridge creek being
needed for work on the rim road near
Anderson spring, to which point in
structions hare been issued to move
them. Clearing on the section of the
Medford entrance intended to be
graded during this season was begun
on the 14th inst., and this work nnd
tho grading will be prosecuted as rap
idly as possible, and it is expected
that a new piece of road will be com
pletely grndeV providing a little more
thnn a mile, to eliminate tho section
known as 'Cork Screw Hill,' which is
the worst piece of the Medford road,
and the only piece within the park
whicli presents unusual difficulties to

''With the exception of this hiii,

between the park line nnd Medford,
and it is believed to be impossible nt
this late date to arrange for the com

prove it for traffic conditions this

the accessibility to points of interest
nfter entrance has been achieved will

EXCITING HORSE RACING
MARKS OPENING OF FAIR
Tho tact that (ho Medford race

Is evidenced by the list ot entries on
tho card for tho County fair begin
ning Wednesday, Sept. 9. Tho repu
tation ot the track, as well as tho
Ideal weather conditions here, has
brought in a number ot tho best
harness horses in tho northwest, most
of them contestants last year for th
15000 purso at tho State, fair at Sa
lem. Among these are Aldlne, with a
mark of 2.13 U and Donnlo Antrim,
2:12. owned by Chas. Todd, ot Port
land; the well known Dr. Ways, 3.13,
from Los Angeles, and Porter Pros.'
3.17 pacer Great Northern, from Spo
kane. The "talent" will also welcome HI
Hogoboom's stable, from Woodlawn,
Cal., headed by his famous pacer. En-
chalada, and his trotting mare, Vlr
glnla Lee. The Daniels stable, from
Eugene, will be here, with Batie Verne
and three other good ones; also tho
Staats stable, well known locally, and
George Swisher has bis famous Apple
gate wonders almost ready to como
out of tho hospital.
The local Interest, howeTer, will
center In the performance ot onr own
prides, King Seal, 2.11...., and Albla,
2:114 Both of theso horses will glvo
the visitors something to think about,
and It would not surprise anyono It
tho real contest developed between
these two local horses (except, ot
course, Jack Sheridan, who wouldn't
admit Albla was beaten It ho camo In
last). In any event, both horses arc
sure to make a showing to be proud
of.
The running races Wilt also show
some new Mood this year, and Dick
Turkln'a "old reliables" will probably
land in the "also ran" class. J. M.
Holman and Chas. Knelling have each
entered two godd ones, Jack Whitaett
and the Porter string from Grants
Pass will lie here, and Daniels has two
good runners la addition to his har
uesa horses.
The track could not be In better
condition, as the dry weather and
proper sprinkling and raking havo
resulted In Ideal conditions for racing.
The card is especially good for Fri
day, on which day the stores will be
closed during the Ktteraoon.
The exhibits are going to be a great
surprise to thoss? who thought the
l6ng dry spell would Hurt them, as
that very condition has enabled there
who had water available, to show the
most wonderful results, and many
who sever exhibited befere will ex
hibit this year. War la what Sherman
said It was, but "It's an III wind that
blows nobody good.' Don't forget
the dates.
