General Joffrv is 02 years old. He
entered tho army at 18 Vears of age
and served thmilglt the Fntnco-l'russ-sian
war. He led the French forces
that occupied the ton of Timbactoo
and later becatue military governor
of Madagascar. Having completed
til? organisation of the province,
General doffre returned to France
and was given high office in the
nrjny. He is an export artillery of
ficer olid a lover of mathematics,
which play no small part in warfare.
General Joffrc is generally credited
with having brought the French
army to the point of .efficiency that
only recent brought forth words of
prnie from nil parts of Kurope.
Littlo more than a-year ago Gen
eral Joffre went lo !tuj!n and re
ceived marked consideration at the
hands of the czar and Grand Duke
Nicholas during the Kussiau army
maneuvers. He has been anted for
his discipline. During recent army
maneuvers in France General Joffre
summarily removed five French gen
crnN for their inability to stand the
physical tc-ts, lie has demanded as
high a physical standard for offic
ers n for rank nnd file.
Meld Marshal Sir John French
gained his iiamo in the South African
war, where he saw much nctive ser
vice. Ho is considered, next to Lord
Roberts nnd Kitchener, the best army
officer in Great Itritain. He is an
expert cavalry officer and command
ed Lord Roberts' cavalry division
during the Cape Town campaign nnd
at the relief of Kimberley. Sir John
was born in 1852. a son of Captain

him, It. M. Itoycc, Ills attorney, as
serted today before tho Federal In
dustrial Itelatlons Commission.
Suhr was arrested In Arizona, nnd
then thrown into a box car and licit,
over nlsht," ho said. "Suhr was
taken to Log Angeles, Fresno and San
Francisco, being lodged In a hotel un
der dctcctlvo guards In tho latter city.
"When Suhr retired, a detective.
armed with a loaded revolver, sat at
tho foot of tho bed and talked to him
all night.
"From San Francisco, Suhr was
taken, to the Alameda county jail,
whero ho was kept thrco dnys. He
told me he was place; :n a cago cell
and when ho tried to Ho on a bed
and sleep, the bed clothing wai
pulled off him by a detective. When
ho attempted to sleep on the floor, ho
was poked with rolls of paper. If
he leaned against the side of Ihc cage
his guards pounded on tho barn
Frequently they would walk him up
and down the corridors of the Jnl:.
Finally, duo to this treatment, he
agreed to talk. lie signed some nun
of a statement, I asked him what it
said and ho told mo ho did not know
but It related to shooting."

rican war Sir John commanded a
cavalry division in Natal. At the bat
tle of Klandslaagtc ho was virtually
in command for Sir George White,
arming when the fiaht was nearly
over, declined to supersedo him as
commander and thu avoided robbing
Sir John of nny of the credit. Gen
eral French afterwards took part in
the battles of Reitfoutaiue nnd Loin-
bardV Kop. Just before the siege of
Ladysnuth, when the Doers were
drnwincr in their lines. Sir George
White felt it would be useless to keep
so good a cavalry officer bottled up
and therefore ordered French to
leave, which he did by Iho lat train,
running the gauntlet of the Doer out
posts.
During tho dark period of the war
Sir John French commanded the edi
tor before Capo Town, and with an
iuadcipintc cavalry force succeeded,
throuuh months of constant fighting,
in preventing the Itoers from occu
pying Capo Town. On his arrival
with reinforcements Lord Roberts
placed General French in command
of his cavalry division. In the ad
vance to the relief of Kimhcrtey, the
garrison and population of which
were in dire straits. Sir John, with
his entire cavalry division, ihishrd
ahead of the main forces, although
the veldt was swarming with com
mandos, and galloped into Kimber
ley after ninety-six hour or fiewc
fighting. Ho had literally cut his
way through the lines of'tbe besieg
ers. When peneo was declared, Sir
John went to Aldcrshot as comman
der of the first nrrny corp. From
1007 to 1011 he held the high post
of inspector general of tho fores.
Since 1011 he has been chief of thu
imperial general staff and first mili
tary member pf the ntjny council.
