Special writers and scientists accompany Mr. Knowlos,
who has gone into the hills clad in a broaoh-elout and will
pick berries, disroots, eateb Fish and sua re nirds For the
next two months. His evovv move will be Faithfully
chronicled by himself and other spaoe writers and every
effort be made to manufacture a. cheap newspaper sensa
tion out of a humdrum experience. His adventures will
lose nothing ui the narration and will need considerable
"pep" to be kept veadable.
There is nothing remarkable in living a couple of
months or even longer in the forests. Countless genera
tions of pioneers have done it, not as an easy way of mak
ing a living by Selling the sensations experienced to yellow
journals, but from necessity. The stirring story of the
pathfinders who blazed the trails across the continent
makes the artificial experiences of the nature fakirs tame
indeed.
If half-developed paleolithic and primeval man could

developed intellectually as the "Digger Indian could make
an easy living without labor bv nature's bountr, thero is
no reason why a fully developed civilized man of the twen

the ages at his command, could not repeat the perForm-

Hearst is hard up for sensations when he so laboriously
attempts to manufacture one but his readers are trained
to look for slush instead of news, and it is a much more
harmless diversion than his efforts to force a war with
Mexico.
THE CARMAN INDICTMENT
npTIE Miueola, Long Island, grand jurv, after duo inves-
tigation, returned an indictment finding Mrs. Flor
ence Carman, wife of Dr. Edwin 11. Carman, guilty of
manslaughter for the murder of Mrs. Louise Hailoy, a
patient of Dr. Carman, who was shot while consulting the
physician.
The evidence was purely circumstantial. It showed
that while Mrs. Bailey was consulting Dr. Carman a band
was thrust through the window with the revolver, and the
testimony indicated that it was Mrs. Carman who fired
the fatal shot. Witnesses testified that thev saw hep entoi-
the house after the shooting and her ext'remolv jealous
disposition supplied the motive.
How the jury arrived at a manslaughter verdict would
oc interesting. .Manslaughter is defined as the unlawful
killing of a human being without malice expressed or im
plied; the killing in sudden heat or passion, due to suffic
ient provocation. Mrs. Bailey was deliberated shot down
from ambush the result of cold calculation,' with everv
precaution to shield and protect the guilty partv. There
was no apparent provocation. It was a case of murder
not of manslaughter.
Mrs. Carmen is either innocent or guiltv. She deliber
ately murdered Mrs. Bailey or she did not. There is no
half way sentence. IT guilty, as indicated bv tho testi
mony, she should be tried for murder.
lTow the grand jury ever returned an indictment for
manslaughter is a mystery, for the indictment docs not fit
the crime.
What Makes Milk and Butter Yellow
Thnt'the rich yellow color demand
ed by tl0 public in dairy products is
primnrily due to the diameter of the
cown feed is demonstrated by rec
ent 'experiments carried on by the
department in cooperation with the
Missouri Statu Kxperiinent Million.
For some years dairy experts hmo
filt'ii Mudyin-r this ipicMion. Their
conclusion i that, although to some
extent u breed clmracleri-lie, the in
teiiMiy of this yellow color may,
within certain limits, be increiiM'd or
diminished at will by cliitiiging tho
nnimalV rations.
Chemical leMs show that the vcl
low pigment in milk consiMs of sev
eral well known pigment found in
green plants. Of tliee the princi
pal one is carotin, so called lieciiuso'
it constitutes n large part of tho
coloiing matter of cm rots. The oili
er yellow pigments in the milk arc
known iih xnntliophylls. Tluc ate
found in a number of plants includ
ing grass but are especially abund
ant in yellow autumn leave.
These pigments pass directly from
tho feed into io milk. ThU explains
tho well know it fact that fresh, i;rccu
ginss and carrots incrciino the yel
lowness of hultcr, tho only standard
by which the uvenige person judges
its richness. On the other hand, u
large proportion of lieo pigments is
deposited in tho body fnt und cse
wheio in tho cow. When tho ration
is changed to ono containing fewer,
carotin and xaiithophyll cousHtiientH,
this hoarded stoio is gradually drawn
upon und in consefiuenco tho yellow
ness of the milk does not diminish so
rapidly as it otherwise would. This
yellowness increases, however, lio
instant Iho necessary plant pigments
nro restored 0 tho ration.
flrecii ki nits is pi nimbly richer in
carotin than any oilier dairy feed.
Cows fed on j will therefore produce
Iho liijjhcnt colou-tl hultcr, Green
corn, in which xnnthophylls conMi
tute the chief pigment, will also pro
duce n. highly colored product. On
the other hand, n ration of blenched
clover liny nud yellow com is practi
cally devoid of yellow pigments and
the milk from cows fed upon it will
gradually oso its color. It U, of
course, indiputnbly true thai the
breed does influence the color of the
milk fnt; but a'ry tho ration and
there will bu a corresponding varia
tion in the color of the milk fitt in
each breed.
In cowh or the Jersey and flucm
sey breeds the body fnt is fwiticntlv
of such u deep yellow color that somo
butchers jind consumers look wjtii
disfavor upon beef from these breeds.
For this prejudice there is absolute
ly no jiiHtificnlioii. Tho yellowness
of the fat springs from tho same
causes ns the yellowness of (ho mk
fnt, nud thero is no reason for oh
jecting in one case to tho very thing
thnt is prized in tho other.
