Pro and Con on the Water Question
To tho Kdlter:
I am a resident taxpayer of Med
ford nnd live Just across the line
marking the city limits.
With this homo and other (not
much) property I own In our beauti
ful city 1 paid last jenr above U00
city taNcs. 1 heard no complaint
from my neighbors Just across .the
street, who wore fortunate enough
to be Just outside tho limits, about
my high taxes, which were for tbo
benefit ot the city, nnd the construc
tion of Its water s.vstem which wo
were cqtinlly enjoying.
Xow, however, when thoro Is an
effort made to equal txo all somewhat
by a water rate, wo hear a groat Into
and cry about, confiscation bt pro
perty. Why should It seem Just to some
people that other should stnnd all,
or the greater percentage of the bur
den of tho maintenance ot public
blessings which they enjoy.
Tho residents of the suburbs have
till tho benefits of our city at their
doors, and tho possibility for more
beautiful homes than close In, nnd
not all theso people nro tho poor peo
ple wo have been hearing about
neither nro all our poor living in tho
suburbs.
Many of them nro within our city
limits aud willingly or otherwise pay
ing their share of paving, city taxes,
etc, which go toward tho making of
a city proper without which tho beau
tiful suburbs would bo an Impossi
bility. In a recent Issue of your paper one
of the complainants acknowledged
he would not bo wlthlu the city with
the higher taxes.
Should they not contribute In some
way to the expenses that make for
these blessings? As to tho destruc
tion of our suburban homos nnd cltv
ns well nothing will do more to Hint
end. than "a city divided against It
self." "And It a kingdom bo di
vided against Itself that kingdom can
not stand" llkowlse n city.
What must we supposo tho strang
er within our gates thinks of tho fre
quent and unwarranted assailing ot
thoo whom wo havo placed In au
thority. Wllf they want to locate
when there U so much bickering and
strlfo?
If this Is continued It will soon bo
impossible to get a man who cares
aught for his reputation to take a
public office, amongst us.
I think If wo Just stop and try and
sec ourselves as others may seo us,
and then put our shoulder to tho
wheel and work as unselfishly and
with as little remuneration as others
arc doing wo will accomplish more
to tho purpose of a "bettor and big
ger Medford."
