The members Issued the followInK
statement;
' Tho Just three fires havo demon
atratcd tho ncod of somo drilled vol
unteers with soma experience In
handling fires that aro not afraid to
take hold, and bo ahead, regardless
of any conditions whtcti might exist.
Tho business men have expressed
their destro of a drlllod oliintcor
department, being organtzod to jro
tcct their property. It has been tlio
gossip of the street, that the old
company struck for phones, which
was tlio common expression ucd,
nnd which was not tho cafe. The
council cutting off tho phones had
nothing to do with their disorganiz
ing, in fact only a few of the boys
hnd phones paid for by the city In
tho first place, sovcra; or thorn that
had tho alarm system for night call
always did pay for their own phones
oven though they were Installed
mainly for flro service. Therefore.
no desire to make It plain to tho
public, that v.'o do not ask any little
jietty thing of this kind to bo hold
as a byword, by tho citizens or
newspaitcra nnd for tlio gossip of tho
streets. We do not ask anything of
tho council that would not tend to
make mora protection for the citi
zens. It has also been stated that
wo nro organizing to get free phones,
which It not the care. We ask noth
ing of the city council, but wo ar
organizing for the protection of the
property Interests of tho citizens
of Medford. We hope that our action
will meet tho approval of tho pub
lic." Respectfully yours,

ATtSTAR THEATRE
"Hearts Adrift" Is an especially ap
propriate namo for tho four reel
drama in which Mary Plckford
contejt to us In tho first coast release
of the Famous Players Film com
pany Tho story Is a sweetly pa
thetic one. It is Mary's own, and It
lays bare tho Vagaries, tho yearnings
?
t
and aches of three hearts that are,
after all, merely human.
Thcro Is not space adeqnato to de
scrlbo tho last reel. It is crowded
with dramatic situations, with deep
appeal In all of them. Reference
has beeu made to backgrounds and
photography. Many of tho scenes
nro ng animated paintings. The
Iuwh of tho ocean, some with tho
enmcra pointing toward the sun,
tho waves reflecting tho sun, aro ex
ceptional. "Hoarts Adrift" Is tho
first production of tho Famous Play
ers on tho Pacific coast. It is a pic
ture of beauty, of power. At tho
Star Theater today and tomorrow.
