cupation ot Vera Cruz, the city, thu
state and the nation paid tribute to
day In a demonstration chiefly ro
niarkablo for Its silence nnd solemn
ity. For four miles through tho cltv
itrcoti, the funeral cortcgo paised
and behind It In an open carringa
rode the president. Ho sat for tho
most part, with head tared, though
the May sun beat down on him and
mercury climbed above 70.
Perhaps a million persons saw
tho 17 coffins, each on a caisson,
borne from the Uattery plaza In lower
Manhattan to tho naryyard In
Hrooklyn. The procession was noar
ly two hours In passing.
For All Who DUil
Though there were but 17 of tho
dead In the procession. Secretary of
the Navy Daniels made It plain that
the ceremonies were for all who had
died at Vera Cruz, not only tho 17
whose bodies wcro brought up by
the cruiser Montana, but also Clar
ence Harshbarger and Henry Pulllam,
who have slnco died.
Tho religious ceremony at tho
navyyard was more Impressive, If pos
sible than was the sight of tho slow
moving cortege.
Throughout tho procession
mounted pollco closely surrounded

navyyard.

neighboring roofs. Tho heat was op
pressive and one of the marines from
tho Wyoming fainted and wat
dragged out of the front rank by a,,
captain.
