WOMAN
A STAND-PAT
THE absolute disintegration and decay of tho Progrcs
sivo or Hull Moose party in Oregon is emphasized by
developments during the present campaign. The lack of
registration and even of candidates signalizes the hope
lessness of the cause. .Many of those who hoped to ndo
into political power by hanging onto the coat tails or
Roosevelt popularity are now seeking office as republicans,
while others are open in their espousal of the stand-pat
candidates.
With nine hungry office-seekers trying for the guber
natorial nomination of the 0. O. P.. not a single Hull
Mooser is in evidence. Almost every one of the nine is a
stand-patter, with a stand-pat record, though some of them
show their political insincerity by championing prohibi
tion for expediency.
Among the more violent Hull Moose advocates of a
brief two vears since, was the

and stand-pat interests to del eat the candidacy of .lona

ber interests.
Mr. Hooth is allied with the following big financial
interests: The Scligmans of New York, the FleisacheiN of
San Francisco, the Wendling-Johnson company of Califor
nia and Oregon, the Klamath Development company and
the Northwestern Electric company of Portland. With
them are more or less closely allied the Pittock-Leadbcttcr
interests, owners of the Portland Oregonian, various paper
mills, power companies and timber tracts.
These extensive financial

they doubtless seek to gobble up the forest reserves and
the water-power rights. While the expressed fear is that
the people will, by the initiative, confiscate corporate
property, the real fear is that the people will prevent the
non-resident interests from confiscating public property.
Mr. Booth's record is that of the ordinary successful
business man who has taken full advantage of his oppor
tunities to become wealthy. He is a pillar of his church
and Qininontly respectable in all that the word implies
notwithstanding that his methods of acquiring timber are
now in disrepute. He is a self-satisfied stand-patter and
Jiis platform is nothing but a string of platitudes without
a vital plank.
Probably nothing could shock Mr. Booth more than to
accuse him of the alleged political vagaries preached by
Roosevelt and advocated so vociferously liy the Ashland
Tidings only so recently for Mr. Booth is nothing if not
"safe and sound," even if he is politically mediocre.
How can a sincere progressive support Mr. Booth ?
