Soon after tho Copporfield inci
dent, Mws Hobbs, tho governor's pri
vate seorotnr.v, received n letter from
a gontleinan in Amsterdam, Holland,
telling her he hud read nn account
or her visit to Copperfield and ask
ing her to send him the story n it
appeared in the American papers.
Tho loiter was so charmingly and
naivrly written that Miss Hobbs ans
wered it, at the same time sending
h in a newspaper story that printed n
pie t tiro of herself, which in the fol
lowing letter he speaks of as "her
photograph," at the same time ask
ing him to -end her the Holland
newspaper story. The correspondent
in roplv sent Mi-s Hobb a clipping
from the Amsterdam papers which he
translates for her. It turns out that
he U n bov of 17 and his letter
shows n very bright boy, too. When
we say that we doubt auv American
boy of the same ago could write so
good a letter we fanev we have said
about as complimentary n thing as it
is possible to be said. The letter
follews:
'Feb. 10, 'II. Am-tcrdam.
"Dear Miss Fern Hobbs; It was
already so long ago siuce I wrote
you that 1 thought you hadu't taken
notice of my letter. So you can un
derstand how much 1 was pleated
yesterday coming home from school
to find a letter from Oregon, and
then such n kind one, from tho far
wet, at n distance of half a world.
"Yon wished you could reply in my
native tongue as I do in yours. But
jtm havo the luck to belong to one
of the greatest and most energetic
peoples of the world, whose language
is spoken by many peoples, and 1 be
long to one of the smallest states of
Europe, whose language, except in
our India, Belgium and South Africa,
no one can speak. So every Dutch
gentleman must know nt least the
three languages, German, English
and French.
"I have looked for the newspaper
in which I rend the notice. Because
it i in Dutch I'll try to translate it
as good a I can do. The name of
tho newspaper is 'Hel Neiuws van den
Dag' (The News of the Day). It
stood in the paper of the 3th of Jan
uary. The translation i:
" 'In the American town Copper
field, in the state of Oregon, were
since n long time, severe impropri
eties. The local authorities allowed
conuivaiiecly the evasion of the de
cree against the abuse of taking li
quor, even they nccelernted it be
cause they took advantage of it. The
burgomaster and some members of
the town council theyself, namely are
innkecjwrs. This had excited the ill-
bumor of many citizens and the lord
lieutenant of Oregon had menaced to
take the necessary precautious.
Waiting for the military expedition
announced by him, the 'alcoholUts
of Copperfield tinned themselves
with revolvers. At the time that the
soldiers of the lord lieutenant would
arrive all tho citizens of the town,
who liked a sensntion very much,
wore, before the station. Grout was
their astonishment when nobody
came out of the train except a young
pill. She went to the burgomaster
and showed him it nuindiito of the
lord lieutenant, whoso secretary she
is. Itv proxy she required the im
mediate resignation of tho daily gov
eminent. The burgomaster who
found nil the rigorous measui'os of
the girl as comic us bold, refused
flatly. Hut the young lady- MUs
Font Hobbs was not put out ot
countenance. Accidentally thetc
were in the train some nrtlllcrv men
commanded by a colonel. Perfectly
in due form and always bv proxy, she
commanded tho colonel to proclaim
the town under n state ot siege, to
take prisoner the burgomaster and
three of the members oT the town
council mm to search the persons
who were at tho station and to di
arm them need be. The colonel
could not do olo than to obey. The
united became dtsnnued. the inns
were closed and the innkeepers was
commanded to send their provisions
of alcohol abroad if they did not
want these provisions to bo confis
cntioned. Miss Fern Hobbs hud such
n decide way of acting that nobody
dared to think about opixsition. Thr
secretary of tho lord lieutenant is
not easy.'
"This translation will be bad Kng
