"On Wednesday evening, Febru ary 18, my mother handed each Pythian Sister ni the supreme chiefs official visit to the temple, one apple each, whilo I personally handed them out at the supreme chancellor's visit to tho Pythian lodges, at which nil of the visitors wcro present. These were handed out with wrappers on as requested. 1 also placed one box each in the reception rooms of tho Miprctne chancellor, supreme keeper of rec ords and seal, board of control of insurance department, with the re quest that they be distributed. "I have- never in all my life wit nessed such n scramble of the en tire crowd as I did for Medford np jiles. Oregon has mado a splendid impression on the Pylhians attend ing the jubilee, which will be heard from in tho not fur distant future. There were no other products of nny state distributed but Oregon's. Your wire of Februnry 1!) was not deliv ered to mo until 0 p. in. of February 20, though I was registered at the hotel (New Willnrd), where tho ju bilee service wore hold. "Tho handling of this matter hn been u pleasure to mo and I shall feel a thousand lime repaid if Tal isman lodge end tho city of Medford reaps the reward by an increased demand for thoir products, which their enterprise merits. "With kindest wishes to you all, I am, sinceicly and fraternally, "J.. It. KTINKOX. CI. K. It. S." THE CRESCENT CITY HARBOR IT is proposed to send n .Inokson county representative to "Washington to appear before the rivers and harbors committee and the board of tinny engineers in behalf of the construction of a harbor at Crescent City. Army engineers, after exhaustive surveys and examin ations, have reported favorably upon the construction of a harbor at Crescent City at an estimated cost of $1,800, 000, which will have an average depth of twenty-four feet at low tide. They have, however, refused to recommend its construction, until assured that such a harbor is essen tial to the development of the country served, and coir vinced that a considerable area will be benefited thereby. Capital, according to those who have spent consider able time and money in the effort, cannot be interested in tho building of a railroad from this valley to the coast,; unlive "ismircrl flmtstich si hnrhnr will lin cnmdmii'tiwl Tltui railroad, therefore, depends upon the harbor and the harbor, to ,i certain extent, upon the railroad. A harbor at Crescent City and n railroad connecting would be worth millions of dollars to Jackson county. In short, it would assure development of natural resources now impossible because of freight rates and the long over land haul. A short road to water, with the Panama canal opened, would revolutionize conditions throughout this region. It would make copper mining a possibility by pro viding smelter sites as well as transportation. A few years ago the county and citv sent Will (J. Steel to "Washington in behalf of Crater Luke. As u result nearly three-quarters of a million dollars are being expended there, all of which will indirectly benefit the community during future years. VKKniCTSl-iKPAXSlON OF t S. COMMUKCK AC'TKlt OPKXlNlJ Ol' TlIK PANAMA CANAL UNIVERSALLY REGRETTED UNIVERSAL regret follows the announci resignation of Professor P. .1. O'Cara as etnent of the is pathologist for ."Jackson county, lie was antlv described as our most useful citizen and certainly his work was the most im portant of any in the valley. "While the narrow-visioned attitude of the recent grand .jury had nothing to do with his acceptance of a much bet ter opportunity, it certainly was not an inducement for Professor O'Gara to reject the offer made him by the smelter trust. The continual harping of small-bore village critics will wear out anyone. However, they are in a de cided minority in Jackson county. Professor O'Gara predicts a wonderful future for the Rogue River valley. Familiar with all the fruit belts of the world, he is firm in the conviction that no place offers better opportunities and that life in no locality is pleas anter. He looks forward to the dav when he can return and make the valley his permanent home. The best wishes of the entire valley go with Professor O'Gara in his new work, and a brilliant future for him in the scientific world is confidently predicted.
