COUNCIL 10 ACT
BILLY SUNDAY REVIVALS
UPON RESIGNATIONS
OF 18 FIRE BOYS
Tlic mow gambling ordinance, the
retention f Chief Ainnnn nnd tlio
rcsignnlioii-i of tlio eighteen volunteer
fireman bccsiuso of tlio eity denying
nine of their nutnlicr free telephones,
will ho the principal matters coming
before the citv council nt the regu-
Inr innnthly meeting tonight.
Tlio deposing of Chief Aninnii, if
Mich a couro is followed, is expected
to cause the jmlhcriujr of tonu
clouds. One plnu suggested to dis
pense with Chief Aiiinnn and his $9(1
n month sntnry, nnd $1.") a month
feed for private horse, nnd put As
sistant Chief llnrry Line nt the head.
It is understood that Assistant Chief
Ling would not thus mount over the
head nf his superior nnd that the rest
of the firemen would balk. Hesides
scores of Chief Amann's friend- feel
that n little sentiment should he mix
ed with the economy policy, nnd the
city strive for a compromise, in view
of Chief Amann's twenty years of
service for the eity.
In regard to the recitations of the
volunteer firemen, some of the coun
cil maintain that they most of
whom have interests here, should he
willing to mnfco a sacrifice for the
city nnd not raise the cry of "free
phones or no fight fire."
The, chief objection to the proposed
new gambling ordinance, which is n
replica of the state law covering the
vice, with the exception thai it pro
vides lighter penalties is that it con
tains a joker, that intend of increas
ing the ban, decreases. It provides
punishment for games thev piny at
Monte Carlo, but none for games thev
play in Mcdfonl, and intricacies of
banking u game are befuddled. Some
of the council hold that the old ordi
nance slrould be retained, with nn
amendment or two.

pnpiM'S lwribiug tlio revival sorvioo.s boing hold by
Ditty Sunday. Slio is oiithnsiiistic upon tho subject mid
says:
"I wish we could have lilm (Sundnv) eoine to Medford and Include tlio
surrounding town by special excursion trains to Medford.
"Medford needs a Hilly Sunday If for no other reason tluvn to close, the
picture shows on Sunday."
There is little danger of Hilly Sunday's coining to !Mod
ford, thank heaven. He is a luxury that wo will have to
forego, nt least until better times. Tor Hilly Sunday eonies
high and tho money has to bo in sight before the eontraol
is signed.
Sunday is one of several high-prieod revivalists who
have commercialized salvation and made it a business
proposition so many dollars raised, so many souls saved.
It costs money to have Sunday's choice mingling of the
billingsgate of the gutter with tho slang of the bleacher
and the jargon of the jockey, stirring up an hysteria in
weak minds that lie dubs religion.
' Billy Sunday's great, lurid revival show is managed
much like the greatest circus on earth. First of all conies
the contract and the guarantee. It is usually so high that
it takes most of the churches and congregations in a largo
city to raise it. Then eonies the advance man and the
press dope. The eity is districted and orgauixatiou
effected, livery church worker is pressed into the cause
and kept busy. "When preliminaries sire completed, the
main showman and his corps of assistants, musicians, class
preachers, etc., arrive. Press matter galore is furnished
and if the papers do not give liberally of their space, they
are boycotted.
TTov can the finite mind comprehend the infinite?
This fact doesn't bother Hilly Sunday, Lacking compre
hension to solve or even appreciate the eternal Mystery,
Sunday takes the Lord into partnership and does his
thinking for him. He knows just what the Almighty
thinks. "God is bound by laws He cannot break," asserts
Sundav, who proceeds to limit the Creator.
Sundav is about as far from the ideals of the lowly
Xazarene as it is possible to get and profess Christianity.
Yet. good church people everywhere receive him with
open arms and turn their poekothooks inside out in the
hope that he will give them a new birth of religion and fill
for awhile vacant church pews. That Sunday and his ilk
really accomplish a lasting reform in humanity has never
been demonstrated. The religion based on emotional
hysteria is not an abiding faith.
As for suppressing the Sunday movies well, there are
far worst' things the people might be doing than seeing
"Quo Vadis," the -Last Days of Pompeii" and other in
structive and entertaining films on a Sunday afternoon.
Listening to Hilly Sunday is one of them.
There are a groat many people always trying to reform
the other fellow trying to force their own ideas and cus
toms upon their neighbors under the impression that
theirs is the only true way to salvation. Like Hilly Sun
day, they have taken the Lord into a partnorship-by no
means silent and seek to create virtue in others by
sumptuary laws enforcing their own opinions.
Those are happiest and best loved who mind their own
business and who seek only to do unto others as they
would have others do unto them.

Mail Order Success Due to Advertising
A llttlo clipping In last week's In

them Is so Impressed with It that be
Is studying out a plan to combat tho
situation presented.
The paragraph was merely a clip
ping from a large mass of literature
sent out weekly by tho American
Fair Trade League, which Is en
deavoring to save tho smaller busi
ness man from tho ruin threatened
by the big city competitor who se
cures business through direct cata
logue advertising.
The paragraph was a slmplo reci
tal of an address delivered at a re
cent convention of mall order house
managers. The speaker told bis
hearers that the success of his Iiouho (
was due entirely to auvcrtuing, and
ho said It was tho practice of his
house to study the country news
papers. When ono wag found th '
did not contain tho advertising cr
local merchants that district was
flooded with his catalogues, and al
ways with good results.
The explanation, of course, Ii
easy, for readers of these nowspap-
tractcd by the list of bargains and
prices and placo their orders, not
knowing often that the samo articles
and prices may be obtained at home.
Tho speaker concluded hU address
with the statement that with loral
merchants advertising as they
should tho mall order business
would receive a severo setback.
Tho plan to meet this condition
whcb suggested Itself to the Hills

men to unlto and buy space In the
local papers for a year, tho spaco to
bo filled with cards of tho different
merchants. In effect this would be
a business directory and would at
least Inform the readers of the pap
ers, many of whom, It must not be
forgotton, are nowcomers, what
lines of business aro represented In
Mlllsboro.
This business man figured that
thcro aro more than 100 different
concerns In tho city, only a small pro.
portion of which Invito trado or lot
