A compnrNon of the 1011 spray
ing calendar with thoo of previous
yr-nrs will show some very import
nut changes in its makeup. It has
been the policy of the pathologist's
office to Uue n calendar yearly
rather than to print a large supply
of nn is-iiie which would do for sev
eral year. Tho discovery of new
and better sprays nnd methods of
application, together with the intro
duction of new plant troubles, nec
csMtntc tho making of various
chnnges from year to year. Tlio
changes aro all in accordance with
the best methods which hnvo been
found by careful experimental work.
Important Points
One important point brought out
in the calendar U not in the part de
voted to the uo of lime-sulphur in
the spring. It will be seen that
blnck-lenf 40 is combined with lime-
sulphur where aphides must be com
untied, iius combination makes n
rather co-try spray, but if properly
applied will save spraying Inter on
for aphides. The rosy aphis i n
serious iwst because it attacks the
fruit clusters.
Tho nitrate of soda spray for
stimulating shy bearing tree? has
nl-o been added. sA indicated, the
nitrate of soda may be mixed with
lime-sulphur, especially in the spray
ing of pears, or in snrnying apples
where it is not necessary to delay
lirae-sulohur snrnvine until the bud
begin to swell.
The iron-sulphide spray has been
omitted nnd in its place the atomic
sulphur is ndvised. The iron sul
phide spray is very affective, but the
trouble of ranking it np has some
times deterred fruit growers from
doing tho necessary spraying in the
prevention of apple mildew.
Apple Tingle
In n few instances npple tingis
caused considerable foliage injury,
and it has, therefore, found n place
on the calendar with its remedial
spray.
Potato growers are requested to
pay particular attention to the mnt
ter of nrcveuting Ifhizoctonin infec
tion on iMtntoes. Scab should also
be prevented. Many are not nc
quninted with Kluzoctonin, but it is
certain that if this disease becomes
general it will make it difficult to
grow potatoes. For Rhizoctouio, it
will be noted, that the calendar ad
vises the dipping of potntoes for
three hours in a 1 to 2000 water so
lution of corrosive sublimnte. This
will also prevent scab infection.
Treated potatoes should never he
eaten or fed to nnlmnls. Formalin
is the regular treatment, for scab,
where lihizoctonin is not present.
Prevention of theso diseases by dip
ping the tubers to be used for plant
ing is the only treatment outside 61
rotation in crops which is also ad
vised.
XoUfy Pathologist
It must bo understood that the
Calendar docs not contain all tho in
formation flint may bo needed at
times. Now nnd then minor troubles
on special crops appear and requiro
treatment not given in tho calendar.
Besides, if too much matter were put
in a spray calcndur it would become
too cumbersome. Again, a disease,
although important in itself, but hav
ing a 'very limited distribution and
of little general interest, could not
be given space in a calendar. As nil
instance, tho rust of apples and
pears, which this office has been
studying for sovernl years, is omit
ted for tho reason that it is not, an
yet, generally serious. There hnvo
been ono or two instances where
somo injury was done, but in this
cuso ndvico was given personally. In
passing, it may bo said that this
rust has as its nlternnto host tho in
cense cedar. This has been worked
out by this office. Whenever new
troubles appear, they nre given im
mediate attention, and, if serious,
aro always carefully studied so as
to detennini! means of control.
