Tho Kxpcrlnient Stntlons wero
established lu this county for a
(loflnlto purpose. Those responsible
for their establishment Intended that
thpy should actually experiment with
plnnts and animals; that these Insti
tutions should discover, by experi
mentation, new facts regarding
plants and animals. To make such
work of permanent value and of
Beneral application it should deal
with fundamental principles.
The Experiment Station Is not a
Demonstration or Model .Farm. It
was not established as such and
should not bo maintained as such.
Wherever experiment stations have
attempted the model farm plan they
, have evaded tho law, and in most
Instances have accomplished very
little permanent good.
Work of Southern Oregon Station
Tho Southern Oregon Experiment
Station is a stato Institution, and is
supported solely by tho state. The
work at this station is devoted pri
marily to experiments with fruits
and vegetables. This does not Imply
that this station woutd neglect other
lines of agriculture In southern Oro-
gon, but at present some of the most
difficult and urcont problems need
ing solution hero are purelr horticul
tural problems, and all of oar ooei
gles are being devoted to a solution
of theso problems. Tho work, then.
Is for tho purpose of solving prob
lems for the farmer which the far
mer cannot bo expected to solve for
himself.
TextliiK Variolic of Fruit
Tho station Is devoting consider
able time and space to the testing. of
new and promising varieties of
fruits. Valuable varieties of fruits
from all sections of tho United States
and Europe have been planted and
are. being tested to determine, their
suitability to the climatic and soil
conditions prevailing here. Special
attention will also bo given to deter
mine their residence or susceptibil
ity to dUease. We are making a
special effort to find new and vat
uablo varieties of pears which will
not be as susceptible to pear blight
as most of tho standard varieties
now grown. This will bo by far tho
largest variety collection of pears
ever assembled in America. To make
this work of as great value as possi
ble the station has arranged with
orchardlbts In different sections of
the valley to co-operate In this work.
They will bo supplied with and will
plant a few trees of each of the most
promising varieties of pears. In this
way the soil requirements of these
varieties will soon bo determined.
Wo have also planted all of tho
newest aud most promising varieties
of raspberries, and some of them
produced fruit the first summer af
ter planting. One variety produced
fruit which measured an Inch long.
Another ripens its fruit earlier than
uny of tho varieties heretofore culti
vated. Wo are also testing forty
eight varieties of strawberries. Some
of these havo proved of very great
value In other states, and it Is hoped
thut these will prove as valuable
here. Included In this collection are
all tho famous now fall bearing
varieties. Some of theso produced
fruit thu first fall after planting.
All tho finest new varieties of cur
rantH havo boon planted, with thu
liopo of finding varieties which are
larger, better flavored and more pro
ductive than tliOBy now grown.
New varieties of peaches, plums,
primes, cherries, Japanese and Chi
nese persimmons, pecans, figs, olives,
ii nd jujubes have been planted, and
theso collections will be enlarged
this winter,

Hi-ceiling Valuable Xevv Pours
Ono of tho most Important lines
of work being conducted by this sta
tion is the breeding of new and more
desirable varieties of pears. W are
crossing the very flnoat flavored var
ieties with the blight resistant Chi-
neiso strains and growing them In
very large numbers with tbc expecta
tion of combining the desirable char
acteristics of both In no variety.
According to tho best blight experts
vory valuable and promising results
should bo accomplished from such
work. That thlB Is possible Is ovl
dent from some of the promising
hybrids of tbeso two species of pears
which have appeared in recont ean.
The writer knows from the results
obtained from his grape breeding
work In tho east that the possibilities
of such breeding work are almot
unlimited. In this breeding work at
tention will also bo given to other
characteristics besides resistance to
blight, such as quality, early and
heavy bearing, sUe, keeping and
shipping quality.
Experiments With l'ertlIU"rs
We are conducting ver elaborato
fertilizer experiments In various sec
tions of tho valley, to determine tho
fertilizer needs of tho various types
of soil. Most of theso experiments
are being carried on with fruits:
but durluK the past two seasons con
siderable attention has ulna been
givon to fertilizing alfalfa. Some
very valuable results havo already
been obtained with alfalfa. In some
instances the alfalfa crop has been
doubled and in ono Instanco an In
crease of COO per cent was obtained,
by tho use of superphosphate. It
has also been shown that other fer
tilizers, as potash and nitrogen, aro
of Ilttlo value on alfalfa In this
valley. Tho action of fertilizers on
fruit trees is much slower and tho
results so far huvo not been so mark
ed as on alfulfa; but In some of tho
orchards It is already apparent that
certain feitlllzers aro having marked
effects. In our work the fort"1 -has
been applied In varlouH ways.
Usually It Js upplled to tho soil, but
pear far mure valuable than Oregon
vetch, which Is the cover crop usual
ly grown here. Tho Indications now
are that those new legumes may en
tirely replace tho old Oregon vetch
as a cover crop In this valley In tho
future. It might ho stated that ono
of the legumes which we are testing
this year, and which was planted
last September, already has tho lar
gest nitrogen nodules on tho roots
of any legume ever grown In this
valley.
We arc atso giving special atten
tion to the amount of eced to sow for
best results, and our cover crop
plots aro giving some very .valuablo
results from this. It has been founJ
that tho usual seeding Is too light for
best results,
Pruning KvperimcnM
Kxtcnslvo pruning experiments
-with fruit trees havo been started
and tho work will be continued for
niany year's. It Is hoped as a result
of this work thut the best methods
of pruning may bo worked out for
our conditions. From some of tho
cq-operatlvo pruning experiments In
young bearing orchards It has al
ready beon found that far better re
sults can be obtained In such orch
ards by materially reducing tho
amount of pruning now being dono
by many orchardlsts.
Kxperimenti Willi Vegetables
During tho past season a limited
amount of work was carried on with
vegetables. Limited space prevents
going into a discussion of this work.
Wo wish to say, howover, that work
was carried on with tomatoes, pota
toes, lima beans, garden beans, sweet
corn, ogg plants, cabbago, and pop
pers. A detulled report of this work
will be published In tho near future.
