guilt. It was proven in the caso at issue and in a dozen
other cases. But the highest court in Oregon forgets that
it is a tribunal established for the administration of jus

the case knowing that the law under which 'McAllister

Is there any wonder courts arc no longer venerated

HELP THE HOSPITAL
A on institution all Aledtord should be i)roud of is the

It is probably the finest hosnitnl ever lurilt in m .itr ,w

consequently it has a struggle to exist. It could not keep

Sisters, whose life is a sacrifice to humanitv.
Whatever the people of Medford can do to help ahum
this most needed and worthv enterprise should bo gladl'v
and cheerfully done. It is the most humanitarian of our
institutions and the most deserving.
The hospital is not a sectarian affair. Its doors are
open to all, rich and poor. Many of its patients are char
ity patients. It is, in a broad sense, a conmiunitv hospital.
The site was purchased by public subscription. '.Manv fra

organizations, among them the L

Ihe Jiospital is far from being completely furnished
or equipped. Many necessary conveniences arc lacking,
much equipment is still to be supplied, and public co-operation
is needed to make the hospital more complete as well
as to help it continue in "operation.
Recognizing the many needs of the hospital, ladies of
the Greater Medford club have undertaken to assist it by
holding a bazaar and fair next week for the hospital's
benefit. It is a wise move on their part and their efforts
should be appreciated by liberal patronage from those who
have the city's best interests at heart.
It is to be hoped that everyone, rich or poor, Catholic,
protestant or heathen, will co-operate iu aiding the public
spirited ladies of Mcdford in raising money to assist and
better tho hospital

Corn growers should observe the
following peints:
1. Securo aeelimutoil seed. If imt
grown loeally, seeure from u loeabtv
having conditioiis as bimilar to vour
own as rosbiuie. navinir soeuroi a
satisfnelory variely, save your own
seed u'gularly. Vour corn 'will eou
tinuo to improve ns long as you ro.v
il !f seed is carefully selected. ".Mm
to secure and develop n variety that
will utilize tho entire porn growing
season, yet mature nicely before the
nverago occurrence of killing frost.
Extreme enrliness is secured nl the
expon.o of yield. A vaiiety may be
rapidly dovclnpcil for earlier or later
maturity by proper selection of seed;
hence quiekly adapted to the locality,
if not wholly urelimuled.
Do not nttompt to grow corn
on poorly drained ; on very poor; or
crop to apply manure to. Corn is not
crop to upjily manure to. Corn is not
n, "soil improver,' like clover or al
falfa. Tho cultivation necessary in
bucccssful corn growing is tho "soil
improver."
U. Preparation of tho soil should
not lie deferred until timo to plant,
thus permitting the soil to dry out
badly, making it humpy and impossi
bleblo to fit properly.
Tho best procuration requires tho
follewing:
(a) Deep fnll plowing, leaving the
furrows untouched to catch tho pro.
cjpitntion as completely ns possible.
(Ji) Harrowing ns soon ns tho soil
is fil to work in tho sprint: to prevent
I enisling uuil to hold Uio moisture.
() Sufficient cultivation from tho
opcning-'of spring until corn planting
timo to keep the soil mulched and to
keep down tho weeds'.
(d) Thorough, deep cultivation
just before planting, producing u deep
mellow seed-bed,
(e) Harrowing once or twice be
fore) tho corn is big enough to culti
vate. Tho above preparation insures
plenty of moisture for tho corn and
an nbundanco of available ' nlant
food. One of tho primary purpohos
of cultivation is to encourage- the de
velopment of available plant food in
the soil. Such preparatory cultiva-
Jtion reduces the cost of production
ny getting ml of (he weeds largely
before the com occupies (ho soil.
