plans for a clean-up campaign annul"; orchards to
eradicate all trace oC blight are printed elsewhere in this
issue. They have boon approved by tho county court ami
by tho J'ii-st of" the week tho war tin pests will bo on in
earnest.
In brief, the plan provides for tho appointment of nine
additional inspectors for such time jus needed, the thor
ough inspection of all orchards, the flagging of infections
and tho notice to owners and agents to clean up as per
instructions. Refusal or failure to obey ordci-s will be
lollowed by the destruction ot iniccteu trees at the ex
pense of tho owner, liens being levied against property to
cover cost ot work.
Mr. Uarson is emphatic in the announcement that
eo-ojieration must be forthcoming from tho orchardists,
and if necessarv tlio co-operation will be forced. The day
of temporizing has gone by. Orders of inspectors must
be promptly obeyed." .Because they have been ignored in
the past, the present campaign is necessary.
That no orchardist need fear blight has been demon
strated again and again. It was demonstrated some four
years ago here, when a similar clean-up campaign was
successfully waged. The cause of its spread this season
is due entirely to carelessness on tho part of some orchard
ists and unfavorable weather conditions. Some ignored
inspectors' orders, some indulged in lake experiments,
thereby helping spread infection not only in their own
orchards, out in their neighbors1.
Success in fruit growifig is achieved bv care and atten
lion to detail, as it is in other business. The county spends
money to help the orchardists protect themselves, but
their own co-operation is essential to complete protection.

and spring find the orchards uf Jackson county the clean
est as well as the most profitable in the world.
Sooner or later every fruit region has to master blight.
This winter finds campaigns under way in all the fruit
sections of the northwest. Those not cleaning up will go
out of the orchard business but the Itogue River valley
intends to continue in-business.

TRAINING SCHOOLS FOR SERVANTS
MISTRESSES
AND
i
A CORRESPONDENT writes warns the need of train-
1 ing schools for servants.
The idea is a sensible one. "Why not givo every girl a
course in domestic science that will equip her to manage
her own household, and also enable her to earn her a living
in other households?
. A clipping is enclosed from the Minneapolis Tribune,
telling of the work done in that city, as follews:
Tho domestic science work will bo broadened this year as well to meet
tho demands of working people. One of tho Innovations will bo a waitress"
course, which will train young women who work In restaurants, and girls In
private homes, Trhoso duties include preparation and service of meals. In
struction in cooking In a chafing dish wilt be part of this course. The cooks'
course will be offered nsaln and in addition there will be n class In the night
hlFh school on plain pastry and cakes, derlened to meet tho needs of hotel
and restaurant cooks as well as those in domestic work.
A still more neglected branch is that of teaching women
how to treat servants. Until women learn this, the ser
vant question will be a problem, for .self-respecting girls
will not submit to treatment accorded by many house
wives. They will continue to prefer factory and depart
ment store work with smaller pay find greater freedom.
Statistics gathered show that more household servants
drift to the underworld than go from any other occupa
tion. One of the chief reasons is the treatment accorded
the household drudge by the mistress.
"Whenever you hear of women talking of the servant
question and complaining of a constant succession of ser
vants, none of whom fill the bill, it is almost a certainty
that the employer is as much to blame as the employe.
Though no school can inculcate human sympathy and
jcominon sense necessary to the successful employer,
women can be taught essonthtls of efficiency and' hibor
savingns well as rules of conduct that will g'o Jar toward
raising the desirability of household servants' occupation
in the eyes of working girls.
