AMONG (he uegleeted indtislries of the Rogue River
valley is grape growing. Cliaos of all kinds nour
ish novo. The finest table grapes m the worm are pro
duced, superior in size, color, flavor ami keeping qualities
to those of California.
Knongh experimental growing has been done to prove
conclusively that grapes enti be profitably grown through
out the valley, but they have never been grown in suf
ficient quantity to establish a market or to ship by the
carload. .
Fathered by A. 11. Oaron, an effort was made a few
years ago to establish the grape industry around Grunts
Pass, but it never was gone into in the extensive manner
required to establish grape raising upon a commercial
basis.
Small tracks have been planted to grapes, largely table
grapes, especially Tokays, but many of these have been
neglected. Mr. (irsonhas a commercial vineyard but
there are few others.
What grape culture might mean and should mean to
the Rogue River valley is indicated by the following dis
patch proving what it does for a small district in the San
loaqiun valley. (. ahlernia:
l.OUI. Nov s. The sntpo iwuon. now eloolnic. lm hrnunht more thnn
$2,000.01)0 luto tiiU section There wore I'll cars of Tokav nuio

there were more than Ro.OOO tons of wlno Rrni grown In thla tlUtrltl
which sold from $10 to J In per ton. tntiMng a totl of $2.2.0.00o to In
irnttored among tho growers of a district lose than tweut inlli stqunre,
taking l.odl a a center.
Inch of the idle laud of this valley, particularly in the
foothills, is declared by experts to b'e the finest grape laud
in tho world. Small family vineyards have been in con
tinuous production for decades around .Jacksonville and
elsewhere and choice wines are made for local consump
tion. Much of this now idle laud that is unfit for other
agricultural purposes can be thus utilized.
J n order to place grape culture on a permanent com
mercial basis, there mustj)e a largo acreage planted suf
ficient to ship the product in carload quantities to eastern
markets. If there worconly a few acres of applet and
pears in home orchards the fruit industry of the valley
would not amount to much. This is the condition of the
grape industry today. No one makes a business of it.
The vineyard has the advantage of the orchard in many
ways. It begins to yield returns years earlier. It does not
require the capital needed to tiring an orchard into bear
ing, the original investment being less and the curetaking
expense smaller and the profits just as large for the in
vestment. The Uogue River valley today might be realizing sev
eral millions of dollars a year income from grapes just
as California districts are. Tt would be in a few veal's if
someone would set the fashion for Rogue river grapes,
like Rogue river peal's, peaches and apples, will outsell all
other grapes in any market.
