COMMERCIAL CLUB.
Iredell Judson Philips, ono of the
earliest settlers of Jackson county,
died at his home, 32S N. Ulversldo,
Moil ford, on August 22, 191.1, at
3:30 p. in., after nn Illness which
dates back several years. Ho was
born In Owen county, Indiana, on
March 1, 1S3S. When a young man
ho moved with his parents to Union
vlllo, Mo., where on April 21, ISCt,
ho was married to Callsta P. Down
ing.
Ho crossed the plains in 1SG2 and
located In I .a Grnndo. Haker county,
Oregon. In 1S05 he moved to Jack
son county, where tho city of Med
ford now stands, and became ono of
tho founders of this city. Ho was a
man of marked ability and identified
himself with all tho various Inter
ests of tho community, and by his
gifts nnd donations aided largely In
tho development of ono of tho most
beautiful cities In Oregon. Mr.
Phlpps belonged to that class of
sturdy pioneers who, by tholr ability
and Indomltnblo energy, made pos
sible tho splendid civilisation that
wo today enjoy In this great north
west country. Ho was a fnnilllar
flguro upon the street of our city
until enforced Illness In the last few
years necessitated his retirement to
tho quiet of homo, when? ho wns
most tenderly cared for by the lov
ing hands of wife and children. Sev
eral winters were spent by him In
his homo in Rcdlands. Cal.. In nn
attempt to recover his falling
health.
In early manhood ho was con
verted to a Christian llfo and be
came a charter member of tho First
Methodist Episcopal church of Med
ford, and for forty-nine years he
was actively Identified with all tho
religious Interests of our community,
no was a devoted husband nnd lov
ing father nnd liberally provided for
his homo nnd Its needs. In the
death of Mr. Phlpps Medford has
lost ono of Its leading and most In
fluential citizens.
Ho leaves a largo circle of friends
nnd relatives to mourn his loss,
among whom nro his widow and
four children, William J. of Alberta,
Canada; D. Edward. Dr. Ira D. and
ond daughter. May. of Medford. Two
