TlTFifnul that Secretary of State BVynh Mnisos to spend

Makes both oTuls moot has provoked a groat deal of par
tisan criticism. There are fco i'ow things that Mr. Bryan
can he assailed upon that any occasion is seized with avid
ity. jNTr. "Bryan1 is doing no luore'iior less than Ohamp Clark,
speaker of the house of representatives, Senator Roberta.
La Follette and a score of other federal office-holders have
done for years without criticism. 1 To and others, have the
right to spend their vacation as they see fit.-
To he sure Mr. Bryan's actions are in questionable
taste.. His frugality anil penuriousness are not attractive
qualities, hut as long as his honesty and integrity are un
questioned, such minor flaws are to be expected and can
be forgiven.
The cabinets of both Presidents Roosevelt and Taffc
spent a great portiou of their time traveling about the
country building up a political machine, and making parti
san speeches in favor of some local or state candidate. Tt
is less objcotionable for Secretary Bryan to lecture to
.chautauquas than it was for Secretary Boot to speak in
defense of corrupt political lungs and grafters.
Like tho fuss over Bryan's grape .juice beverage, the
gossip over Bryan's chautauqua lectures, is much ado
about nothing, fit only as a subject for the silly summer
season.
