ED ROOT.
i mi
THERE is mourning in Alodfortl over thu (loath of Nil
Root, friend to ovoryone and especial friend to a
dozen generations of children. For over forty years ho
has been a familiar character in the Roguo River valley,
with a kindly word of welcome and a cheery greeting
for all.
In early youth a cyclone destroyed the Root, homo in
Comanche, Iowa, killing the father, injuring lid and
wrecking the family fortunes. With his mother, Nd came
to Oregon, where for many years she taught music. Her
memory was enshrined as' that of a saint in the heart of
her son, and the mention of her name always brought tears
to his eyes.
Whatever there might have been coarse and vulgar,
whatever there might have been selfish and egotistical,
whatever there, might have been grasping and moan iu the
nature of Ed Root was carried away in that Iowa storm of
many years ago. If the storm also took the fruit of knowl
edge, with its serpent venom fraught, it was not alto
gether unkind to liim. It left
m another ago would have graced the court ot a king.
It is fitting that this friend of the children should be
remembered "by the children
is laid to rest, livery child
flower to lay upon his bier
xue past, to adorn the him ot memory in after years.
It is not a time for sorrow, for Ed Root, one of those
sons of man who had not where to lav his head, has onlv
left a world that illy treated him for his Father's mansion.
Ami Have wo not the eternal premise:
"Blessed arc the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Through my numerous friends, 1
have been informed of the many com

portunity of thanking all those who

by their words of commendation
showed their appreciation of the
work thnt this office is doing. I have
no words ot condemnation, nor havo
I any but tho kindest feeling for those
who saw fit to differ from tho great
mnjority of thoso present. They un
doubtedly feel that they arc .honest iu

Appreciation
Rogue River valley, and particularly
Jackson county, has made tho stren
uous work of this office a pleasure
rather than an unpleasant tak. It
has been a matter of lovo for the
work rather than for tho money that
is in it ns everyono knows, or may
know if he so choose. I vnluo more
highly the moral support nnd the con
fidence of my friends, than I value
money.
The newsparors of the county, edit

invaluable assistance in my work. )
could not havo done what has been
