The mines of the Qnlice district nro pay ing henvy tribute in rond tnx and nrc mulcted fifty cents for every ton of freight they ferried over tho river. McXary has sold his twenty five ncro orchard tract to M. J. Morris, n recent arrival in the valley from Portland, Maine. Tho tract is one and one half miles west from Phoenix and is known as "Drooksidc Place." Kino acres of tho land is set to pears with peach and apricot "fillers," tho latter bcinp now in bearing. In addition to this there nrc six acres of younger pear trees. The place is well situated and is one of tho most home-like orchard tracts in the valley, being situated on either sido of Coleman sreck nnd having a beautiful wooded background. Mr. Morris who is now living in Med ford, will erect several new buildings on tho place this summer. Tho price pnid for the laud was $0,500 and tho bale was made by Chas. D. Hoy. A brother of Mr. Morris was in Medford n few weeks ago and while hero purchased several dwelling bonnes. FINAL PAYMENTS ON WAITE TRACT It is considered n good omen that deferred settlement wns made with two Ashland citizens the past week for land comprised in what is known as the Wni to tract across Hear creek, says tho Ashland liccnrd. George Stephenson received approximate $22,00(1 as finnl payment on .183 acres sold nt $100 jwr aero n yenr np and William Mycr received a lesser payment as tho bnlnncc due him for 3011 acres which ho nNo sold a year ap nt $100 per acre. The latter tract bad been in tho Mycr family since 1872 and wns known ns the old New house donation claim. The payment of these large amounts at this time, is indication that there is money back of the movement now on to settle them and make them ac cessible by means of nil iulcnirbnn line. Tho money came by check from tho Italfour-Guthrie company of Portland which it has been under stood for somo time wns backing Mr. Waitc in his activities in the valley. This company is n wealthy coucem interested in a big steamship lino nnd grain commission business. ASHLAND PURCHASES . AUTO HOSE TRUCK ASHLAXD, April 4. The Ashland city council tins purchased an nuto hose nnd chemical truck for $3800 same to be delivered in approximately four months. A. G. Long of Portland closed the deal.
