I CHURCH VS. SALOON 1
Sotno wcckB ngo one of the home
missionary societies in tho cast re
ceived from n mnn in western town
n request for a minister, and tho for
mation of a church there, promising
to aid in its support. Ho said he was
a saloonkeeper and a holder of prop,
crty in tho town, but ho found ho
could not sell his town lots because
thero was no church in tho town.
Did you ever hear of a minister
honding to n liquor trust asking for
teh establishment of a saloon in tho
town, because without a saloon the
lots were unsalable! Why not?
There is no question but that the
Influences of tho church and of the
saloon are antagonistic. The tend
ency of tho church is toward the
highest sooiiil and moral life of tho
town. The snloon lends to overthrow
that which is esteemed the purest and
tho best. Wo havo both with us here
in Medford. To which should wo give
ullegiunco und support! Neither can
flourish without tho support of a
goodly number of our citizens. On
which eido is your influence fellf It
is for us to say which shall dominate
Medford.

Iho prime trouble-innkor nntl cmiho of municipal disconli
and that hi.s removal mihr rcHtoro harmony. At any rate
tho experiment is worth trying and is sanctioned by the
Aoto at tiie special election last Saturday.
For five years Mr. Effort served as councilman, part
of the time as president of the city council. His relations
with his associates were in the main harmonious, lie ren
dered good service to tho community. Hence thero lias
been a great deal of disappointment and chagrin among
his friends over his courso as mayor, which is attributed
to his following bad advice.
The protection Mr. Hoggs has accorded to the notor
ious Royal rooming house, evidently in exchange for tes
timony, as indicated by the following letter, alone disqual
ifies him from tho position he holds. The letter reads:
March 21, 1913.

Dear Madam:
There may bo ome effort to bother or Intimidate you on account of

Very truly yours.
o. e. noaos,
City Attorney.
There are those who oppose Mr. Hoggs' removal on
iho ground that he should be continued in" office to make
tho Eifert administration still more unpopular and enable
recall proceedings to be started in July, when the six
months of office required shall have expired. Hut the
recall is only a last resort and should not be used if. pos-
siuic to avoid.
Recall elections are nasty affairs, and have an injur
ious effect upon the community, resulting in bitter fac
tional fights and leaving sores that are hard to heal. They
destroy the cooperative spirit and unity of the people and
should only be undertaken under extreme provocation.
The mayor and council should drop their personal dif
ferences and get together for the good they can do. Pig
headeducss. has no place in civic affairs.
