IS Tele grams ot sympathy from nil over the world poured tu here today on the widow of Jncqulu Miller, tho famous "Poet of tho Sierras," who died late yesterday nt his home on the hilts overlooking this city. Tho widow nnd his only child, Miss Juuultn. nro prostrated over the poet's death. Miller knew that he wns near death. Just before tho end ho tried to moe from his couch but tho ef fort proved fruitless. Turning to his aged wife ho whispered: ' "I love you, Abble. 1 love you, Abblo. Good bye." Tho noxt words which wero his Inst were scarcely nudlble. "I can't live," he said. I am dy ing. Oh, take mo away, yo angels. Tako mo away. I hear y." YHIeil by- Lily Imugtry Miller's death was directly due to diabetes and arterial sclerosis. He had failed rapidly slnco his Illness of 1911 and when ho was visited two weeks ago by Lily I.angtry, before whom ho had strewn lilies nnd roses In London when the actress wns on tho crest of her popularity, he tried hard to raise from his couch to greet her but wns unequal to the task. Tho effort taxed his strength and aggra vated his condition. Tho nged poet, however, turned until ho faced Mrs. Laugtry and with n smile, said: "Ah, you are so beautiful. But beauty and health always remain with tho good." The famous English beauty, realising how near tho poet wns to death, turned her head and wept Loft $100,000 INtnte Tho gentleness of Miller was one of hid marked characteristics. No Insert, even In tho lowest form, had ever suffered death undor hi heel. Colonel John P. Irish, n lifelong friend, told of an occasion when the poet was almost killed under the hoofs of his famous charger "lllnck Warrior." Colouel Irish held the beast until Milter arose. Dusting his clothes, tho poet patted tho animal affectionately and tald: "My dear dear old Warrior. You must have eaten something that hns not agreed with you." Miller left an estate valued at $100,000. Ho was born In tho Wa bash district of Indiana, November 10, 1S41. In 1850, he crossed the plains with his parents into Oregon, tho family settling In tho Wlllutuctto valley. Murrlctl A Squnw A few years later ho Joined n gold rush to California, was adopted by a tribo of Northern California Indians nnd marriod tho dnughtor of tho chief. But when his wife wns killed by scttlcM In an expedition against tho raiding Indians, Miller returned to civilisation, later marrying again. Miller went to London In 1870 nnd published his first book of poems. Thoy wero nn instantaneous hit nnd ho was lionized by his English nd mlrcM. In 1S77 ho located In Oak land, purchasing several hundred acres of wooded ground, which ho has slnco mndo his homo. Tho poet's wish that his body be cremntcd will bo carried out. Tho cremation will take placo tomorrow nt ten o'clock nt his homo. The ceremony of scattering tho ashes will be rsorved for a latter occasion. 0R0ZC0 BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED LOS ANOKLKS, IVb.
