Millions Invested in Rogue River Power Plants
Power facilities of tlio ItoRiie Rlyor
valley are greater than thoso of any
region in thn northwest. Abundant
power has been developed to supply
the valley's needs for year. Farm
ln by electricity lit an accomplished
fact. Tower and light lines are ex
tending and being extended to all
parts of the valley.
The year 1912 witnessed tho com
pletion of tho first unit at tho Prov
pect power plant at n cost ot $7C0,
000, generating 8000 horsepower.
Tho plant Is planned for flro such
units, developing 40,000 horsepower
at comparatively alight additional
expenditure.
Tho location Is an Ideal one. A
dhortlng dam takes the water out
of tho Rogue river. It Is carried In
a flumo a mllo In length across a
pumlco flat and dropped almost ver
tically In a steel pipe over GOO feet
over a precipice,
Tho poln lino Is of unusually heavy
construction and designed tor a volt
ago of CG.000 volts. Tho poles aro
forty feet long and spaced thirty to
tho mile, the wires are No. 10 strand
ed aluminum cable and aro carried
on Insulators fourteen Inches In di
ameter and weighing thirty-threo i
pounds each.
Tho pioneer power plant at Gold
Hay generating 5,000 horsepower, Is
used for emergency purposes.
Companies Consolidated
The CallfornlaOregon rower com

ct a number ot small lighting and
power companies In southern Oregon
and northern California, tlio most Im

Electric Power company of Yreka,
Cal.; the Klamath Falls Light & Wa

and tho Rogue River Electric com-j

The transmission lines of the California-Oregon

from tho Greenback mine, twenty

Prospect In Oregon, and Shasta river.
Fall creek and Klamath Falls, in Cal
ifornia, with a sixth plant under con
struction on the Klamath river, at
Ward canyon, Siskiyou county, Cali
fornia. All five of the power plants aro
operated at once on the lines ot tho
company, giving a more steady and
reliable source of power than when
ono plant alone Is operated. Any one
of tho five plants can disconnect from
tho lino at any time and shut down
for repslra. If necessary, without ef
fecting the other four plants.
During tho past four mouths a
numbor of changes huvo been made
in tho switching system controlling
the transmission lines and In cabo ot
a defect in tho line at any point tho
defective section can bo at onco cut

Modern Light
Very few persons understand the
wonderful change caused In tho uso
of electric light by the modern Tung
sten lamp. Ten years ago a sixteen-1
candle power lamp consumed seventy i
watts an hour, and tho price of elec
tric current was fifteen cents per(
thousand watts, making 91 hours' uso,
ot a sixteen candlo power lamp cost ,
a dollar. A modern Tungsten lamp,
delivering sixteen candlo power, con
sumes only twenty watta per hour,
and at tbo present prlco ot enrrent
ten cents a thousand, four hundred
hours' uso of a sixteen candle power
lamp can bo secured for ono dollar,
or four tlin oi as much as was posslblo !
ten years ago,
The uso of Tungsten lamps makes '
a marked decrease in the uso ot clec-i
trie current for lighting and makes
posslblo the oxtenslvo uso of electric
heating and cooking appliances.
