. There are thousands of acres of lain in the valley upon
vIuehfa'j)H)fitable yield of potatoes can lie grown. Water
is, ui course, essential, put mo proposed extension 01 ino
wator system will make it possibleto export hundreds of
em's a year, instead of importing them, as has boon tho
case; in recent years,
.Vine potatoes are on exhibition irrown unon the mis
called "desert." .lust as fine are shown grown upon
black adobe, or "sticky," long regarded as unsuitable.
Abundant yields have been secured oven from the shallow,
pebbly bedrock and hardpan soil. Water is the prime essen
tial to grow a good crop anywhere in the valley though.,
of eourse, certain soils are naturallv better adapted tliai
others. These should all be thus utilized.
As with potatoes, so with onions. Bettor onions are
grown in the "Rogue River valley than jn either the Will
amette or Sacramento valloj--onions that command a
higher price, formerly the valley exported a considerable
quantity, mostly from the Eagle Point section, but hun
dreds ot acres now uncultivated,, particularly beaver dam
uuui, iuv u&puriiuiy aaaprcu to uie onion, wan a nigner
average profit than potatoes or fruit.
Poultry exports assert that conditions arc most favor
able in the Rogue River valley for poultry, even more so
than in California. Thousands of cars of eggs and poult rv
r.rc imported yearly for the Pacific coast cities. The con
sumption in San Francisco and Los Angeles is greater in
each city than the entire yield of the Petaliuna district.
Portland consumes twice as many egirs as all Oregon pro
duces. Tho Rogue River valley should be exporting a car
n day or more of eggs.
The prosperity of the valley depends upon diversified
production. It alwavs has. At much less investment,
without waste of time, the valley could in a year ship as
many cars of potatoes, vegetables and eggs as it ships of
fruit The climate, soil and natural conditions are most
favorable. Water, the one thing hitherto lacking, is now
plentifully supplied. There is ho excuse except lethargy
for not making all these products as much of a business
enterprise as fruit..
There arc niany neglected, natural resources in our
mines and forests that rcnuire great capital lo develon.
But our diversified soil products are a neirlected resource
that require but little capital and only labor to develop to
make this section the most productive and most prosper-
ous of the garden .spots, of the world.
