Dunlop w ho has been actively en
gaged in poultry raising for somo
jeara)l8 the promotor of tho com
pany and aside from 'taking a large
amount of tho stock will manage the
business. The new company Is incor
porated for $25,000 and will erect
its plant on a 23 acre tract northeast
of tho city, said to be Ideal for such
a purpose. According to tho pros
pectus it will be three or four years
before the p'lant will bo in full opera
tion as the number of laying hens to
bo added each year will bo chosen
from tho best stock.
Success with a small plant led Mr.
Dunlop to take up the matter of a
larger one. During tho past two
years ho has been very successful and
has closely studied the business which
is said to bo one in which success de
pends ontlrely upont the brains put
Into It. Mr. Dunlop with 200 laying
buns has made them pay him S2 a
year net and ,njates that this Is not
a high average.
Tho poultry plant will bo one of
tho'largest in southern Oregon. The
clltnate hero Is said to be Ideal for
such a purpose whllo tho tract of land
secured has all of the qualities de
manded for such a purpose. Water
can bo had in abundance with which
to grow kale, clover and wheat while
tho soil is high and dry containing
considerable gravel in which Is of
great benefit to tho chickens.
tMr Dunlop's success with a smal
ler plant led his friends to suggest
thy matter of a larger plant. When
he stated that ho was handicapped by
a .lack of funds for tho erection of
tho necessary buildings and the like
thoy suggested a stock company to
hlin and offered to subscribe llborally
to the capital stock. Tho company
Jius'now been incorporated, tho great
er.ipurt of tho stock subscribed and
building will start soon in order that
spring will find them ready to proceed.

Benton Bowers on the Medford Bridge
Ashland, Ore., August 21, 1912.
To tho Editer:
Replying to your nrtlclo In issue
of the 29th, headed Bowers ct al, of
Ashland, and other articles published
In tho past that wero absolutely
without any foundation whatever,
but published for the purposo of
creating animosity between myself
and Medford citizens, and animosity
between Medford and Ashland, will
say:
I am only reporting tho fact when
I say, that it Is common talk among
the people throughout Jackson coun
ty, that tho Medford papers are
owned and controlled by tho saino
push, that has dominated or con
trolled the action of tho county court
for the last year or so. This may
not bo true. Hut ns a reader of
those papers for tho last two years,
I submit that in their editorial opin
ions their treatment of many public
questions which touch tho taxpayers
pocket, thoy give tho Impression of
being practically under one, manage
ment. Somo one in framing tho Medford
charter undertook to throw tho
boundaries of a city about tho place
and yet leave tho county responsible
for building and maintaining tho
county roads through Medford. Tho
county roads stop at the boundaries
of un incorporated town and our Su
premo courts have ruled that all roads
and hlghwaya insldo tho corporate
limits are under tho control of tho
city government, and that tho coun
ty court has no authority over the
highways Insldo tho rlty limits. And
In regard to tho legislature saying
that tho county should pay for
bridges on tho county roads in tho
Medford district, Malu street has been
a city street for 12 yemra prior to
tho act, and has lost Its status as a
county road. But could tho legisla
ture make the county responsible for
Medford's bridges after giving Med
ford in Its charter full control of all
roads and highways Insldo Its corpor
ato limits.
Now, to get right down to tho
small intestines of this matter. Is
It not a fact, that the push In Med
ford do not represent tho bono and
sinew of that fair clty7 Is it not
a fact that a few frenzied financiers,
are on the rough edge of dlspalr for
public money to spend, and are push
ing this brldgo question? Now, if
Medford wants an elegant re-lnforced
viaduct 100 feet long, tho full width
of tho street, with arc lights, und
street rails for street railway, and a
twenty foot span for tho P. & E.
It. It., Medford can 'build it, and no
ono will object If Medford Is willing
to pay for it. But fqr Medford to
ask tho county to build tho bridge
and tho county court to agreo to any
Buch a proposition, (a an abuso of
discretion, and a manifest injustice
to tho tax-payers of tho rest of tho
county.
Do tho citizens and taxpayers of
Applegate and Evans Creek, Sams
Valley and Butto Creok country
want this luxury for tho broad cloth
persuasion of Medford, or, is It In
fact an extension of the frenzy which,
characterized tho Medford press this
past two years playing fast und looso
with tho tax payers hard earned dol
lars. ,I want to Inqulro, who pays for
.theso things. Does Medford pay for
thorn? Whoro Is tho money coming
from to pay for this proposed bridge,
or viaduct that Jackson county Is
asked to build? Who is pushing
theso extraordinary expenditures any
bridges on tho county roads Instead
of
tho city streets.
Yours .truly,
BENTON HPWKK8.
UNEARTH PLOT TO
BLI
IW'UP SAN DIEGO
ELSEWHERE tho Mrtil Tribune prints n communi
cation alleged to be from Benton Bowel's, the Mle
hrJttcd Ashland progressive who enjoined tho building
of tho Medford bridge because tho county court would
not eonstruce a bridge for hia own use at his 'Polo vanchl
It is not at, all improbable that Mr. Bowers eoUld
prove a complete alibi regarding the letter. It is dated
Ashland, 'Aug. 21, nnd tho Ashland papers state that .Mr.
Bowers loft Ashland Aug. 20 for the Willamette valley,
doubtless to stimulate his progressive spirit in a more
congenial atmosphere.
This fervent communication, which breathes in its
ever line so much patriotic ardor and solicitation for the mil
down-trodden taxpaver emanated from the office ami upon "f.t;
personal stationery from the office of the honorable k
D. Briggs, and is couched in the peculiar phraseology,' COunty court, that win regard thn
fairlv bristening with Briggishism, of that sometime! law, and the public interests by m
corporation lawyer, ndw theself-constituted MeMalum of in tit road fund for building
Southern Oregon m whose behalf my. Bowers has recently
been passing the hat to reimburse for his patriotic ob
struction.
Tt is not intended to cast any aspersions upon the
abilitv of Mr. Bowers as a letter writer, but merely to
shield his fame during his absence. It is not to be doubted
for a minute but that Mr. Bowers could, if he wanted to,
soar in eloquence to the hoights of "small intestines."
No one who knows him, doubts it. Nor is it to be ques
tioned but that Mr. Bowers is capable of settling offhand
in advance the problems before the supreme court. His
civic patriotism is also beyond question, for did he not
compel the people of Ashland to run the city boundaries
around his home so that he could enjoy city privileges
without paying city taxes? And do not all patriotic
warrant shavers want count' construction to cease, so
that the money can be used to redeem at par warrants
bought below par?
The questions regarding the right and obligations
of Jackson county to assist-in the construction of the
Medford bridge, as Multnomah county assists in the
Portland bridges, the charter- obligations and restrictions
and other legal points involved, are now before the sup
reme court for final solution. Pending decision, argu
ment, except concerning the animus paraded as patriotism,
of the obstructionists, is useless.
The Medford bridge is u public necessity. Medford
is therefore spending its agreed share in construction,
pending a supreme court decision on the balance. The
contract is let to a Marshfield man. How it benefits a "few
frenzied financiers on the rough edge of dispair" is a puz
zle only brilliant Minds like those of Mr. Bowers or his
epistle writer can fathom. Medford pays a fifth of the
county taxes and is entitled to a share of the improve
ments and has received none.
If the county court has wasted $500,000 as Mr. Bowers
sayg, it was with his consent and approval. Medford didn't
get it. Why did he not enjoin the construction of roads
and bridges in other sections?- "Why wait until stirred by
petty smalltown iealousy and enmity to strike at Medford
alone? Why di'd he not enjoin the Derby road, if the mon
ey was wasted?
Mr. Bowers, or the learned writer who uses his name,
breaks into the realm of truth when he confesses that one
of the reasons for his display of patriotic fervor in the tax
payers' behalf, is to help elect a new county court that will
distribute the county funds as he thinks proper. And to
help the election along, recourse is had to such appeals to
sectional prejudice as this erudite epistle.
It is well, however, for the world to be informed of the
pure and disinterested motives that actuate Mr. Bowers in
his assumed role of guardian angel of the down-trodden
taxpayer, for if Mr. Bowers, or his amenuensis, did not
thus take the public into confidence, how could the people
ever suspect it? So when Mr. Bowers asks again for con
tributions, come through with the coin needed to complete
the halo, for halos cost money and lawyers demand fees.
