ONGREENREPORTER
WASHINGTON .Inly 18 Hazing
of a green reporter by n veteran
whlto Iioiiko newspaperman wan to
day glvi-n iih tho solution of a ntory
sent broadcast ovef the country by
npeclnl despatches, and a certain
news ngency, and printed In many
morning papern, to the effect that
an Infernal machine hud been sent
to Prenldcnt Taft. and that Assistant
Secretary Shermnn Allen, In opening
It, had nnrrowly escaped death.
When thn new reporter entered
the oxecutlvo offices last night he
was nnked: "Did you get the Infer
nnl machine ntory?" He snld had
not, nnd then, with great detail, bo
was told tho yarn.
When the young man became ex
cited the hoaxers told him the whole
thing was r Joke, hut the report al
ready bad uprcad throughout the
country through his agency. All at
tomptH by tho secret service to "kill"
the report then only aroused further
suspicion, and the story was widely
credited: thn white bouso wan de
luged with telegrams from far and
near nnd tho wildest rumorn de
veloped. The original report was that Al
len'n hands had been badly burned
when ho grasped thn sputtering fuse
of the Infernal machine, but the
hands of the assistant secretary ex
hibited no senrs today. And the
white house nownpapcrmerl, Includ
ing tho hoaxed reporter, wore asked
to circulate a declaration that the
whlto house did not wish to dignify t
such nn absurd report by an official
denial.
