and bade him good bye.
Several Senators aPIred
Three senators were absent. Sev
eral wero "paired" and could not
vote. Senator Culbertson of Texas,
originally voted to oust Lorlmer and
then, being paired with Dupont of
Delaware, who was absent, with
drew his vote.
At 1:40 p. in. the minority reso
lution was called up, holding It to
be the sense of the senate that Wil
liam Lorimer's election was corrupt.
"Resolved that corrupt methods
and practices were employed In the
election of William Lorlmer to the
senate, and his election, was, there
fore invalid."
A roll call disclosed the presence
of eighty-two senators. All seemed
ready for a vote on the minority reso
lution when Senator Dixon of Mon
tanaarose. Ho denied Lorimer's
charges that he had been Involved In
an effort to bribe certain southern
delegates for Colonel Roosevelt.
Lorimer's ejection followed a
three day's speech by tho senator,
dramatic and replete with Invective
for his opponents. Beginning Thurs
day, Lorlmer had spoken in all 11
hours when ho relinquished the
floor at 1:30 this afternoon. Lori
mer's fight for his official life, which
ended this afternoon when the sen

SPRIXGPIKLl). III., July 13. If
there Is u popular clamor for tho
election of a successor to William
Lorimor at once Governor Deuoen
may call a special session of tho
legislature. Several politicians hnvo
suggested to the governor that ho
appoint ex-Senator Hopkins, who
was tho people's choice at tho pri
mary held prior to the election of
Lorlmer.
The governor's statement follews:
"1 am not surprised at the vote
In the senate. The facts wero too
plain for successful controversy. No
one could explain on any reasonable
and honest theory why 53 democrats
would vote for Mr. Lorlmer for sen
ator as they did, or why four demo
crats should confess to ecelvlng
money for having voted for him.
Nor could anyone disassociate this
vote from the bipartisan organiza
tion of tho general assembly or the
'jackpot.'
"The effort to meet these Incon
trovertible facts followed the course
pursued by the defense In desperate
cases In our criminal courts and the
scandals which have followed tho In
vestigations of this case through tho
grand Juries and criminal courts,
and have had their climax In

conspiracy to ruin the reputation o
Mr. ( S. Funk.
"The public, I think, knows In a
general way the enormous influences
which had to do with the election of
Mr, Lorlmer, with the defense In tho
criminal courts and before the Inves
tigating committees of the state and
national senates and the extraordi
nary efforts made to retain him In
bis seat.
"This case has attracted national
attention and the people of our coun
try, I think, will feel a sense of sat
isfaction In seeing the forces of law
triumph over the Influences which
have been brought to hear to defeat
It. It will strengthen their confi
dence In the law."

Protected by Fumlly
Appreciation was expressed by Lor

by the senators. It was admitted, he

Notice to Taxpayers
The sheriff's offieo is sending out not ices to all
taxpayers wliose personal tax does not show "paid."
These notices are beinjj sent out. for the reason that
heretofore the assessor has always assessed the per
sonal property with the real estate and when real
estate was paid, the whole tax was paid. This year,
however, the assessor has placed all tho personal
property in a separate roll apart, from the real estate.
Many people pay the taxes on their real estate alone
believing they have paid all their taxes. For this
reason a considerable amount of personal tax shows
unpaid on the personal tax roll.
Sheriff .Tones believes that in justice to the tax
payers who have intended to pay all their taxes,
they should be notified of their unpaid personal tax
before the delinquent tax-list, is published.
The notices are not a "dun" for taxes, but simply
a notice that the personal tax shows unpaid.
