GIVE THE WOMEN FAIR PLAY.
tvAlR play do
demands Hint
A given roproaonialion on (ho school board. To this end,
lliey have put forward All's. 10. S. Parsons.
Mrs. Vai'sons is admirably equipped for I ho position.
ICduoation is hor profession. Vho was formerly a toaohor
is a graduate of tho University of Miohiiran. took a post
graduate course in pedagogy and holds a doctor of philo
sophy degree.
As president of the (i renter Medford club Mi's. Par
sons has niateriallv aided in making that organization one
of the potent influences of
in arousing civic interest
and enthusiastic in working for the public good.
Mrs. Parsons is entitled to the support of all pro
gressive citizens. The injection of new ideals and
methods into the schools should be welcomed by all. All
the mothers of Medford are vitally interested in the pub
lic schools and this is their opportunity to secure repre
sentation. In their effort, they should have the hearty
co-oporation and assistance of most of the men.
Lot us see what the women can do.
THE STEAM ROLLER.
HPllft steam roller, perfected bv Theodore Koosevelt and
-- ruthlessly used by him to crush his political oppo
nents, is now being used by his enemies to squash the hot
air out of his own boom. '
Apparently Koosevelt has trumped up a contest for
every state and every district where Taft tickets were
olected, for the express purpose of making a grand-stand
play to the people that he was not receiving a square deal
and the wishes ot the people being over-ridden.
As a matter of tact, there has so fax developed so lit
tle real merit in most of the contests that even the Roose
velt men on the committee on the show-down voted
against the Roosevelt claimants. But they offer an op
portunity for the Roosevelt boomers to yell fraud' to
the people.
A great outcry is made against seating the Taft
delegates from the Fourth
laft candidates carried this district and under the rules
governing National conventions are entitled to the repre
sentation. Yet the yell goes out that the committee has
over-ridden the people of California, who don't make
rules lor .National conventions.
Taft's steam roller has done nothing yot so raw
as Roosevelt's steam roller did when La .Kollette and the
entire Wisconsin delegation chosen by an overwhelming
popular majority, were thrown out and a stand-pat dele
gation, without a shadow of substance to back their claims,
seated.
"With such men as Flinn, the millionaire Pittsburg
boodler, McITarg, nigger buver and notorious corrupt ion-
ist who tried to induce Oregon legislature to violate their
sworn pledges and Jlcney, who stacked Oregon juries to
secure convictions by evidence of perjurors in land fraud
cases in charge of the Roosevelt boom, the rvy of corrup
tion becomes a joke, and their pose as political purists a
sorrv satire.
TAXATION IN JACKSON COUNTY.
AXORTJI DAKOTA tax receipt at hand has printed
upon it the years tax levy, which is an excellent plan
as it shows the taxpayer just what the money he is paying
in is used for. Jt would be an excellent idea to have such
a statement printed upon Jackson County tax receipts and
there would not then be so much howling due to misun
derstanding. The North Dakota receipt is Tor Barnes County and
reads as follews:
tax m;w fok 11)11.
State Ilcvontio 3. mills County Interest 15 mills
Stato Wolf Bounty 05 mills County Tuition 2. mills
State Maintenance 1. mills Count' s't'K 3 "illls
o. . ti oi i i . ... County-Hridgo 1.5 mills
State nond Sinking 1. mills Co,nty InimHo fi ,,
State Ilond Interest 1 mills ooUniy Fair 25 mills
State Uovlno Tuborculoiis ...05 mills County Koad 5. mills
Stato Glanders llorsas 1 .mills
County Revenue 5. mills Total .'.. 19.2 mills
Jackson County's tax levy reads as follews:
Mate 2.8 mills Conceal County 1.0 mills
High School 3 mills Exu-rlinuii Station and Ash
land Arnlory 4 mills
(joiiorr.l School l.G mills
Roads and Hridgo 4. mills Total 11.00 mills
In Barnes County, North Dakota, the valua
tion for assessment purposes averages over half of what
it docs in .Jackson County, Oregon, so that the rate of taxa
tion is about equal in the two counties, with the odds
favoring Jackson.
Upon the county court has been heaped all the blame
for high taxes this year largely for political effect. Rx
amiiiation shows the accusation unjust. The state tax
was doubled, the general school and high school increased
by the legislature, all of which the county court had no
control over. The county levy proper, (M mills, which in
cludes the Experiment Station and the Ashland Armory,
as well as a large road and bridge levy, is not excessive.
There has been an era of school building throughout
the county. Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Medford. Central
Point, Gold Hill, Woodville and many other county
school districts have built fine modern sU'itctures and the
school taxes are high in some of the districts excessive.
These high taxes were, voted by the districts the county
court is not at fault.
Public improvements have been the order of tho day
in all the towns. Every village has incorporated as a
city. This necessitates city government and a conse
quent expense. The improvements cost money. The
citizens voted for them and increased their own taxation.
Ashland leads the procession with an abnormal! v high city
tax, and other towns follow closely. The county court is
not at all to blame for these city taxes, but politicians have
succeeded in throwing the general blame for high taxes
upon tne siiouiuers or the court,
As a matter of fact, the smallest portion of the f-axn
tion is that assessed by the county court.
