ROOSEVELT DANGEROUS
TO LAND, DECLARES TAFT
STEUBEXVILLE. O., May 14-
President Taft's first day of the final
campaign through Ohio, which came
to an end here last night, was marked
by the roost pronounced verbal as
saults upon Colonel Roosevelt that
ho has so far given public utterance.
Although in substance all today's
speeches were much like thoso de
livered in Massachusetts and Mary
land, they differed widely in words
used to score Roosevelt.
One of his attacks contained tho
statement It was dangerous to put
Roosevelt In the Whlto house with
his present . constitutional views.
Roosevelt gave the reason tho Amer
ican people aro going to elect him,
the president said, becauso ho was
necessary for tho Job. "The Job that
Roosevelt proposes is tho millenium
he is golug to bring about. All
bosses aro to disappear, politicians
aro going to bo fewer, and he is go
ing to have a finger In every com
munity In tho stato, In every county
and ovorythlng is going to bo heav
enly." Taft Bald If Roosevelt waB
going to bring tho millenium he
would have to take moro than four
years to do It.
"I beg of you to ask him when he
gomes hero whether ho would take
a fourth term. Ask him whether he
Is going to take a'flfth term and why
ho should not continue in oftlco dur
ing his life."
Aiiothor sally was: "Suppose that
Roosevelt was wafted to tho skies In
a chariot like tho prophet of old,
how do you suppose this country
would get nlong, anyhow?"
Toft said the country feels that
lloosovolt's vanity with something
Washington, Jefferson and Jackson
did not cot. and something Grant
--. .- , j
could Jiot got, that ho wus uolng Into
offlco with a sense of power dan
Korous to tho country. Again -ho
wild: "Rooiiovolt likens hlmsolf unto
Lincoln moro and resombloB him Icbs
than any man In history."

PROPOSED UNIVERSITY MERGER.
OVfcRNOtt "ViSSvr has
VJ vestigale and report, upon tho pwposod merger of
the sfate university at Eugene and state agricultural col
lege at C'orvallis. anil requests that any measures al'Coet-
ing the consolidation of these institutions, likely to ue
placed upon the ballot by initiative petition, be submitted
to the committee.
The committee consists of men from all parts of the
state and in all walks of life. It comprises R. S. Beau.
a federal judge of Portland; J. A. Weatherford, an Albany
lawyer; 0. J. Smith, a Pendleton physician; "NV. T. Mariner,
a Wasco county farmer: Will Daly, president of the Fed
eration of Laber: AV. K. Newell, a Yamhill county fruit
irrower and dairyman: John
.... - -,-
ycr; Jii. u. unoinpson, a roruanu uauKer, aim vteurge
iputnam a Medford newspaper man.
There lias been a constant clash between the two
institutions. A largo part of the time of the legislature
has always been taken up in log-rolling by partisans to
secure adequate appropriations. Partisans of one are
under suspicion of having secretly abetted referendums
against the appropriations of the other. 13oth have been
obliged to ,do, politics and not very clean politics either.
Their existence depended upon it.
Thcve exists a class, "in Oregon openly opposed to
higher education. Because litany cannot comprehend the
value ot a university training
from winning it, just as
realize tlif value of good roads strive to prevent other
sections iroin building them.
The opposition to higher education manifested prin
cipally against the university is a stamp of the provin
cialism of Oregon. It seems absurd that a strenuous fight
has to be waged for every eponomic progressive measure
proposed and a systematic campaign is necessary to induce
Orcgonians to better their own condition. Because of our
deep-rooted provincialism, the result of many years of
isolation from the world, Oregon lags so behind her sis
ter statps in development.
Botli the. agricultural" college and the university are
necessary. Whether they would be benefited or injured
by consolidation is to be determined. Both should have
an adequate inaiutenauco provided by a fixed tax levy,
thus removing the institutions from political turmoil and
permitting the development of great educational institu
tions.
BOURNE'S CAMPAIGN EXPENSES.
A
SENATOR Jonathan Bourne's campaign expenses, ;is
fil,ed jn the office of the secretary of state, were
$383.44. The Portland Oregoniau printed tliat Bourne's
expenses as filed vere$J996.26, which is perhaps as near
as the Orcgphiau ever comes to printing the truth about
Bourne. That paper is now threatened with a libel suit,
as the purity of elections layv limits the amount a candi
date can spend to half this sum.
The press associations, without realizing that the Ore
goniau could not in the slightest, most trivial instances,
retrain, from lying about Bourne, sent out the libelous
statement without trying to verify it, so that it was re
produced throughout the state in the Mail Tribune as
well as in other papers.
, This incident, illustrates as forcibly as anything could
the sort of a deal Bourne got from the press of Oregon.
He has aojt only been maliciously lied about, but has been
sjandered, villified, and belittled constantly.
Bourne has become a naUonal figure and is accepted
as a leader in the senate and in the progressive cause
throughout 'the nation. But the people of Oregon know
nothing about it. The newspapers, with five exceptions,
have printed nothing of it, and for $383.44 Bourne couldn't
tell them. If they had known the truth, known what is
known elsewhere, the old machine would not have been
successful in accomplishing his defeat by one who is noth
ingtmorft yor ess than a rich seller of pants.
