JOLTS ANi JINGLES
By Ad Brewn
ASHLAND is again showing its frienUlinoss for Mod
ford by threatening injunction proceedings to pre
vent the county from cooperating with Medrord in con
structing the JUnm street bridge.
Benton Bowers, who is the front of the 'movement,
says ho is not n resident of Ashland, but he is, although
he refused to include his home in the city limits that go
past it. Ho lias the benefit of citv water and all city
improvements and pavement nearly to his door.
Mr. Bowel's alleges three reasons for enjoining the
bends: First, that the county would not build a bridge
across Bear creek at a farm he nwns near Tolo; second,
that he personally examined the present Main street
bridge, and decided it "adequate for tho demands'': third,
that if the county "did not have funds to build bridges
where most needed," that is" at Bowel's' Tolo ranch, "we
would take some action to see that they did not impov
erish the county more by building them where they were
not needed."
Boiled down, the reasons simply spell spite and that
is all that it is. It is the prevailing Ashland spirit to
ward Medford. The injunction .may be brought in the
name of the resident of some other locality, just as effort
was made to have a Medford man bring it, but the action
originated in Ashland.
This is tho kind of reciprocitv Medford may expect
for sending a delegation to Portland and Salem to fight
for the normal school, for requesting the count court to
contribute $7o00 for an Ashland armory, and lor respond
ing -whenever called upon .for. cooperation.
The Main street bridge is badly needed. The present
structure should be condemned. Under the state law, the
county is compelled to miild the bridges on county high
ways. There is nothing illegal about the proceeding any
more than aiiy other expenditure the county has made in
the fiftv or more veal's it has been in debt.

A Portland paper prints a picture
and half column article about the
man who brought the first ballet
dancers to that city. It is an easy
matter to bid for fame.
Portland has adopted an ordinance
forbidding pedestrians to cross the
streets diagonally. This will work
a great hardship on the man who
can't follow the straight and narrow.

- Prof. Ituftg Again.
Dear J. & J. Since I tfirst read
that it was the intention of the coun
cil to post legal notices on telephone
poles any fertile brain has been
evolving a convenience to the public
Patent rights having been taken- out
I will outline the scheme for a col-
lapslblo ladder, one to be stationed
at each of the telephone poles. This
ladder is arranged td meet difficul
ties that will arise when a paving
assessment notice, will bo posted. The
length of these notices will necessi
tate the use of the entire pole from
top- to bottom. As citizens should
not bo forced to purchase climbing
epurs they can use the ladder. My
patent allows the reader to--push a
button every time ho wishes the lad
der to slowly sink a few Inches. In
this1 way ho starts at the top and
gracefully descends to tho bottom
of the notice. If this scheme is not
used It will be necessary to use more
than one pole for each notice or to
add a line "Continued on pole No.
2," a practice that will call for much
walking and soma little observation.
Respectfully, Prof. O. U. Dugg.
HOME RULE ROAD BILL
CONSIDERED TONIGHT
The Medford Commercial club
will hold an adjourned session at 8
o'clock p. in., today at the city hall,
at which meeting there will bo one
subject considered that Is of vital
interest td tho people of Jackson
county, niid that is in relation to tho
proposed "good roads initiation
bills," which nro now being present
ed to the people
It is tho opinion of Attorney A. E.
Itcamcs that If any of tho bills now
proposed are enacted by the people,
that highway construction In Jack
son county will be hindered and kept
in tho background for an Indefinite
period of time.
As Medford Is the leader In all
matters of thla kind, it is considered
necessary that a "homo rule bill" be
prepared that will give to the peo
ploiof each comity In tho state tho
right to contract indebtedness for
tho building of permanent roads, In
any reasonable amount which they
may think necessary, and that this
hill stand alono on its merits and- bo
iioti connected with any of tho pond
ing state measures on tho subject.
There are several other mattors of
importance that tho members of tho
club will consider. Thcro will bo a
full attoudnnce of the Jlvo business
wiefa of tlio towa.
Frank 11. Leonard, C. S..I1.,
member of the hoard of lectureship
of the Mother chnrch, the First
Church of Christ, Scientist, in Bos
ton, Mass., addressed a crowded
hohso at the Medford theater Thurs
day evening. He was introduced by
D. R. McCabe. Dr. Leonard spoke in
part as follews:
We read of the wonderful happen
ings of the times of Jesus, wish they
might be possible now and then ac
cept the universal belief that the
time for miracles has gone by. To
say tho time has gone by for the
power of the Word to be manifested
is literally "taking the name of the
Lord in vain," for He said, "Lo, I
am "with you alway."
Webster defines a miracle as
"anything wonderful." What Jesus
did was in direct opposition to what
we term natural law; but instead of
our accepting and clinging, as -we
have, to so-called natural law as the
real law, wo should recognize that
no law is natural or normal save that
which manifests In all ways and on
11 occasions good or God. What
Jesus did was not supernatural from
the basis of read or God natural
ness, but in full accord with all the
promises in tho Bible as to the re
demptive accomplishment of accept
ance of His work as tho direct man
ifestation of the omnipresent power
or the Word.-
We must accustom ourselves to
reasoning out the things of spirit
and cease believing they are hidden
from us until after the change which
we call death. Tho things of spirit
are eternal and it is as much eternity
now as it ever will be, so now Is the
time when we are to .worship God
"in spirit and In truth" and cease
giving willing ear to tho cry of car
nal mind which Is at war with spirit
and is death unto any possible knowl
edge of God,
The Bible teaches "be ye traus
formed by the renewing of your
mind," and this means we are to be
changed In substance by beginning
again with mind.
Jesus, the Christ, transcended all
material belief and theory when he
healed tho sick with the Word of
God, and yet Ho said, "I can of mine
own self do nothing," Indicating it
was the "mind" in Him, tho Father,
God, which did the works.
The world at large has had great
misapprehension as to the position
accorded to Mrs. Eddy by tho ChriB
tlan Scientists.
Thoy havo never looked upon her
as a creator, but simply as a revo
lator, who through consecration,
Eolf-abnegation and profound spir
itual searching of tho Scriptures, dis
cerned the great truth of tho life
"hid with Christ in God," which nho
transcribed In the Christian Science
text book, "Scleuco and Health, with
Key to the Scriptures," so simply
that any one who Is willing to study
may comprehend and know tho
"truth" which makes man free.
Tho Christian Sclenco text book,
"Science and Health, with Key to tho
Scriptures," Mrs. Kddy's legacy to
suffering and slu-slck humanity, en
nblos one to find tho spiritual truths
in tho Biblo, simplifies and elucidates
their teachings" und makes practical
the example of our Master while on
earth, it does not supercede nor
does It take tho place of tho Bible,
hut makes it moro desired aud stud
ied than ever before. t
The message of Christian Science
to mortals Is tho message of hope.
the message of activity and the mes
sage of joy. it Is the glad tidings
that at lasr we know how to worship
Ood and how to "walk In tho spirit"
that we may not fulfil "tho lust of
the flesh," but "press toward the
mark for tho prize of the high calling
of God In Christ Jesus," "for of him,
and through him, and to him, are all
things; to whom be glory for ever."

That County Koad Fund for Medrord
Itoad District
To the Editer: In n former issue
of the Mall Tribune I contended that
there should be enough funds In that
portion of the county road fund as
signed to tho Medford road district
to be applied on tho county roads in
said district to build' Medford's por
tion of the county bridge.
(Note Medford road district
comprises four sections, viz., 10 and
30, In .rango 1 west, and 24 and 25
in range 2 west. The corporation ot
Medford is approximately three-
fifths of said territory. The rest is
in Medford road district outside the
city limits. The portion ontslde the
corporation pays its portion of Med
ford's county road tax. Now keep
this In mind as I will refer to it
again.)
The county treasurer told me that
there was paid last year (1911) to
the city treasurer tho sum of $0000
and this year already $G000, being
$15,000 within the past 15 months,
as Medford's road district county
road fund; so if that is a fact it
should be In Medford's county road
fitnd now as there has been no part
of it spent on the county roads In
this road district. If so, why the
necessity or bonding the city to build
the bridge. I asked the city treas
urer about that fund. He replied
there was no such fund kept. I
asked what was done with the mon
ey. He said it had always been
placed in the street and road fund.
I protested that the city had no right
to apply the county road fund on
streets of the city not county roads.
I also told him that a number of
taxpayers of this city bad expressed
tho intention of asking the circuit
court for an order compelling tho
city to repay to the road fund the
money divested thcreform. In that
ovdnt there would be plenty of funds
on hand to build Medford's share of
tho bridge.
I spoko to Councilman Watt about
it, and ho said that tho city attorney
decided that tho city charter per
mitted tho fund to ho used on tho
streets not county roado, but with
due regard to him from whom all
legal knowledge Is supposed to flow
I do not think tho charter says uny
such thing; it does say tho county
roads within the city shall bo sub
ject to tho name conditions as the
streets of said city, but It docs not
say tho streets shall have all of the
privileges of tho county roads or
that the county funds might be spent
on tho streets of tho city.
Tho legislature enactment pro
vided that the city of Medford might
form Its own charter provided it did
not conflict with the laws of the
state, but tho laws of the state do
not permit uny city to use the coun
ty funds to bo used ou tho streets
not county roads, and that conten
tion lis an insult on tho common
fieiiBo of tho peoplo or a proof of tho
