STEEL TRUST

President of Wire Company Attempt
ed to Interfere With Testimony in
Grand Jury Room.
NEW YOKK, May 8,-IIow offi
cials of the steel trust, facing gov
ernment prosecution us monopoly in
restraint of trade, calmly ordered
their subordinates to burn all evi
dence of law breaking the instant tho
federal suit was filed was detailed
here today before Referee Henry T.
Brown by Hurrv Whitney, nn official
of the Worcester. Mass., plnnt of the
American Steel nml Wire compnny, n
subsidiary of the steel trust.
Subpoenaed by former Secretary
of War Jacob M. Dickinson, who with
Henry Colton is representing the gov
ernment in the prosecution, Whitney
declared he had destroyed evidence by
direct order of Frank Bnackcs, presi
dent of the American Stpel and Wire
company. He received Bnucke's or
der immediately after the filing of tho
government's suit to dissolve the
trust.
Gathered All Papers.
Whitney declared he had, by
Bnacke's order, gathered, papers con
taininc; nil evidence against the steel
and wire company which were in the
office of George Crngiu, its assistant
sules manager, shipped them to the
Worcester plnnt, persqnnlly took
them to the boiler room and directed
the firemen there to burn them.
Whitney sprung nnother sensation
when he followed up his testimony
about the buniin of evidence by .i
flat statement that President Banckes
of the American Steel and Wire com
pany had attempted to interfere with
his testimony beforo the grand jury
which voted the indictment ngainst
the steel tmst.
Prefacing this, Whitney recited the
operations of the wire pool under the
direction of Supervisor Jackson. He
asserted that Jackson Used prices
and arranged what companies partic
ipating i tithe pool should bid for
contracts.
In Grand Jury Jtoom.
Referring to his testimony beforo
the grand jury, Whitney said that
while he was iu tho grand jury ante
room, George Cragiu, assistant sales
manager of the wire trust told him
President Buaekes wanted to see him
in tho hull. Whitney went.
He swore; "Buuekes told mo 'I sup
pose you remember your instructions
regnrding those papers V
"1 told him I remembered distinctly
he told me to see they were burned,
lie said: 'I never told you any such
thing.' 1 insisted, and hu then told
me, if I could, iu my testimony, to
avoid refcrencu to the destruction of
the Diipei-s, and that ho would like it.
I told him I would have to tell the
truth and he walked away, saying
'Tell them anything yon please' "
Boiling's most sevoro cross exam

story in the slightest degree.
