PORTLAND CHINATOWN
SEETHS WITH EXCITEMENT
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb.' 24". Chi
natown ia seething with excitement
today and more trouble Is feared
following tho shooting of Seid Wing
Thursday. The bullet entered his
side and his recovery is doubtful.
Leo Sam, a Hop Sing tang man,
-whom Sold says shot him, is under
arrest. A rovolvor with an empty
shell was found on him.
A few minutes beforo Sold was
shot an assn83ln killed Shu Ding, a,
cannery foreman. As he belonged
to no tong, it is not believed the
shootings wcro connected in any
way.
Tho polico are working on the the
ory that Seid was a victim of the
fenid between tho Sold family and
the Hop Sing tong, which developed
when Seid Sing's body was found In
a trunk In Seattle, and Oi Sen, a
Chinese woman, and two Chinamen,
members of tho Hop Sings, were ar
rcstod for his murder hare.
An attempt was mado Friday
night to bum tho lumber yards of
tho Big Plues Lumber company.
About 9:a0 Friday night V. C
Green, secretary and treasurer of
the company, and the bookkeeper,
who were at work in tho office near
by, discovered smoko coming from
the lumber sheds and upon Investi
gation they found that a firo had
been set and was burning in the
ends of a largo pile of kiln dried
flooring. Tho flames were running
fully four feet high when discovered,
but Mr. Green and the bookkeeper
qulokly turned on tho firo hose and
tho fire was soon extinguished, but
not until a considerable amount of
the flooring had been badly charred.
That the fire was set by somo one
with tho intention of burning tho
lumber, sheds and nearby offices
there is no doubt, as there were
found partially burned pieces of
cloth which had been crowded Into
the end of the pile of flooring and
covered over with long bundles of
the lumber.
