BUILD
CHURCH
A meeting of the official board of
tlic First Methodist Episcopal church
was held Monday evening, at which
It was decided to at onco commence
tho construction of a now church
building.
About a year ago the church pur
chased a lot 100.100 feet In slzo on
tho northeaat corner ot Third and
North Dartlott Btrccts, one block
north of tho present church building,
and it Is upon this ground that tho
now church will bo built. There
wore somo members of tho board
who favored tho proposed site at the
corner of Eighth and South Ivy
streets, but as tho church now owns
this properly on Hartlett and Third
streets It was considered unwise to
attempt to pay $10,000 for tho Ivy
street property.
Tho new church Is to bo of bun
galow design, and is to have n seat
ing capacity of 750. It Is to bo
built cither of wood or cement blocks
and Is to cost not over $12,000. In
addition to this there is to be ex
pended from $2000 to $5000 In fur
nishing tho church.
It Is expected that the old church
building and grounds will bo sold
and the sales price applied on the
new church building.
Work is to commence on tho new
building Just as soon as tho archi
tect can prcparo tho plnas and con
tractors can bo given an opportunity
to submit bids.
Tho present church building Is by
far too small to accommodate the
present attendance. Last Sunday at
tho rooming services tho church was
packed to Its capacity and somo left
who could not secure seats. The
most inconvenient condition Is that
of tho Sunday school. Every Sunday
over a hundred members of the
school aro compelled to go Into tents
and nearby dwellings to hold their
morning sessions. This Is surely an
unpleasant condition in that If con
tinued for any great length of time
there Is danger of the school attend
ance diminishing Instead ot increas
ing as has been the caso for the past
year, hence it is imperative that the
new building be gotten ready for
occupancy Just as soon as Is possible.
VITKKllO, Italy. Fob. 13. Willi
the resumption of arguments in the
Crimorrit trial todny, it is jseucmlly
buliovcd that the state bus failed to
prove its case, and practically every
body connected with the famous- trial
expects that the accused men will be
acquitted.
That thO men on trial were con
nected with the Camorra there is lit
tle doubt, but there has been a total
absence of direct evidcuco to prove
that any of them had any connection
with the murder of Cuoccolo and his
wife at Naples.
The whole prosecution depends
largely upon the testimony of Ab
bemaccio, the informer, who turned
state's evidence and the defense has
cast grave doubt on his sanity.

WASHINGTON. Feb. l;l. Revision
of the chemical schedule accordiiig to
the Payne tariff law was accepted
today by the deuiociatic house com
mittee on ways and menu. The new
measure is ovpected to increase j-ov-
eriuueutal revenues h- from .fl'J.OUO,-
mill to $1(1.000.(100 a vear. This is
the llrst of the tariff bills to be re
ported on favorably by I he ilemo
crats which fnils to reduce revenues,
nnd it iil-o depails from the demo
cratic system of making nil duties on
an ud valorem basis. The rates on
chemicals were made specillc because
it is difficult to asceitaiii the exact
viilue of chemical pioducls necessary
for an ud valorem rate.
The tariff board also, for the llr.st
time, assisted the democrats in fram
ing n revision bill.
