John .Applegnte, member of one of
the best known pioneer families of
southwestern Oregon, died suddenly
of heart failure at his home at You
ealla last Tuesday night, January 2,
nt the age of GO years. He was a
nativo of St. Clair county, Missouri,
mid one of a family of lo children,
eight of" whom accompanied their
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Apple
gato, on their emigration to the l'n
cifio coast iu 1843, when John Apple
gate was then 1 year old.
After seven years spent in Marion
and Pol counties, the family moved
to Douglas comity in 1850, settling
on tt donation claim of G40 acres, now
part of the townsito of Yoncallu.
There John Applegate was reared and
oduoutcd and spent nearly Jiis entire
life. In 1805 he enlisted iu tho Union
army ns n private iu Company K,
First Oregon Volunteer infantry, and
saw one year's service on tho fron
tier. After the Avar Mr. Applegnte re
turned homo and engaged in fanning
and stock raising.
Mr. Applegatc's father and the hit
ter's two brothers, Jesse and Lindsay,
in 1851 built nt Yoneallu the first
sclpjolhoufce in Dougles county. This
they did independent of outside aid.
They also equipped it with a library
purchased iu New York City and
shipped from there by way of Cape
i lorn at a cost oi stuuu. jnmo
Applegate, later countv judge, com
missioner and representative, was the
first teacher.
